Been thinking a lot about this… if this progression was adopted across all recreational baseball we’d be creating more baseball lovers. Ages 4 and under: no baseball game play. Only practice/fun stuff if anything at all. I believe we are pushing kids away from the game exposing them too early. Ages 5-7: Tee ball. Asking kids to hit a moving baseball at this time isn’t necessary. Let’s solve for action and reps. ELIMINATE RECREATIONAL COACH PITCH! Coach pitch can only be executed properly with professional coaches who throw consistent strikes understand how to deliver reps. IT DOES NOT WORK AT SCALE WITH REC. I’ve seen enough to feel strongly about this. Ages 8-9: Machine Pitch. If someone would invent a pitching machine with an arm that was mobile they’d make a lot of money. I know about the slingshot and I think it’s a good start but not quite it. Ages 10-12: Kid pitch. No earlier. Practice pitching/throwing in practice starting at age 8. Just finishing up my third year as a head coach within Little League but I’m also coming off of 16 years of running a massive youth baseball organization in Northern California so I have seen enough to confidently make these conclusions.

At the start of this year, Phil Mickelson had a crushing ball speed of 165mph. Within 2 months he upped that to high 170’s and topping over 180. That’s an incredible jump for a man in his 50’s! He puts it down to training with speed sticks and explains how he has to change his release the faster he gets. “What I do notice is as I speed the swing up, I have to change the release point of my golf swing. I use length to create the leverage that I want, so it takes a lot of pressure off. But, as I do that, I have to change where the release is. But if I speed up, when I get down to the ball the face will be open. So I have to feel like I’m releasing the club a little bit earlier.” Lefty is a master at going deep in explaining the technicals of the golf swing. Proud dad moment. This is my son Hudson's 3rd year playing baseball. He's a killer whenever he goes to bat. .600+ batting average. Never strikes out. His first two seasons, he was on a team where all four pitchers were the coaches sons. Needless to say, he never got to pitch. This season, he was on a different team. This team has one good pitcher, but that pitcher plays on two different teams. When he's not there to pitch, it's a disaster. Last game he wasn't there, Hudson's team lost 20-1. The other team got 3 hits... that's not a typo. All season, Hudson has been asking for a chance to pitch with the coach saying "maybe" every time. Fast forward to yesterday. Good pitcher is there. We're up 11-4. Good pitcher runs out of pitches with two outs remaining in the second to last inning. Coach puts his son in as pitcher. Son needs to get ONE out. It's a hot mess. He allows 4 runs on zero hits and by some miracle, the inning comes to an end. Coach doesn't have to look at me to know that you could boil an egg on my forehead in that moment. I'm steaming. Finally in the last inning he relents and puts Hudson on the mound. After waiting for three years, Hudson gets to pitch for the first time. 14 pitches. Strikeout. Ground out. Strikeout. Game over. Here's the final at bat.

OF Trevor Condon (Tennessee Baseball) was one of my favorite position players I saw in Jupiter. Collected 7 hits (1 XBH) and 4 RBIs across 5 games. Slightly undersized, but there's some impact (mainly to the pull side) packed into his frame. Wiry, athletic build at 5'11" and 175-lbs. Prototypical top-of-the-order table setter. Explosive and twitchy operation in the box with no-doubt plus bat speed. Feel for the barrel is there, high-level bat-to-ball skills. Controlled the zone well with polished swing decisions in my looks last week. Does tend to hit the ball on the ground, would like to see more line drives. Hit-over-power profile with some PS thump. Gets out of the box unbelievably quick, turned in 70-grade run times. Condon's tantalizing combination of speed and athleticism translates well to centerfield. He can really go and get it and has plenty of range, but if he can shore up his routes (take a more efficient, crisp path to the baseball) he has a chance to become an impact defender. The intangibles with Condon are a nice cherry on top. Advanced baseball sense; stole 2nd on a great dirt ball read, swiped 3rd on a well-executed shuffle lead. Incredibly high motor, plays with his hair on fire. Does not take a pitch off! Always involved, brings the juice! Like the Energizer bunny. Kind of a throwback player in that sense - it's clear he LOVES to play! Think along the lines of Sal Frelick/Slater de Brun (SDB better defender at this point with more of a physical, barrel-chested look). Top 2-3 round type for me this July.

The Giants have officially become the Bad News Bears. They find new ways to give away runs and lose games every single day. Top of the 7th, Giants lead 1 to 0. Yordan Alvarez leads off with a single. The next batter hits a tailor made 6-4-3 double play ball, but Willy Adames inexplicably lobs the throw to second, forcing Basabe to rush his throw to first. Runner safe. Instead of 2 outs and nobody on, there’s still a runner aboard. Then the next batter hits a routine fly ball to left and the left fielder completely whiffs on it. Now it’s runners at 2nd and 3rd with only one out. Next batter, sacrifice fly. Game tied 1 to 1. A routine double play and a routine fly ball. Make those plays and the inning is over with no damage. And if Adames is hurting, which might explain that throw, then why is he playing in a meaningless season? Sit him down, get him healthy for next year and let one of the kids play. Instead, the Giants gift the Astros the tying run. It’s the Bad News Bears, MLB edition. This team finds a new way to beat itself every day.

🚨WEIRD PLAY ALERT🚨 First, weird doesn’t do this justice. This is from Wednesday night’s game between AAA Albuquerque Isotopes at Reno Reno Aces … with one out B9, ABQ leads 4-3, but Reno has bases loaded. Connor Kaiser hits a gapper for a double and seemingly the win … BUT … R3 (Aramis Garcia) scores to make it 4-4 R2: (Christian Pache) runs into Ildemaro Vargas who ran on the field with a cell phone to record the celebration and accidentally knocked Pache over, which is unintentional interference. R1: (Andy Weber) stopped before third, and Kaiser rounded second and started to head to the celebration… BUT… Pache was called out (2-unassisted) so it was 4-4 … BUT … Topes CF Sam Hilliard thought the game was over on the hit so he flipped the ball over the fence to a kid … BUT … Since it was only 4-4, and coach/player interference is not a dead ball, flipping the ball into the stands is an error on Hilliard, and the penalty is the base you are going to at the time of the throw, plus another, meaning Weber, who stopped short of third, was awarded third, and then home to win the game. Final score … 5-4 Reno. Holy crap. Now, they will get the scoring fixed tomorrow (let’s face it this is a new one) but they will remove on of the RBIs from Kaiser, and add an error to Hilliard. The first runner is unearned because he reached on an error, and since Pache’s INT should have been the third out, Weber is also unearned. Absolutely the dumbest, silliest, best baseball ending to a game in a long, long time. Jimmy O'Brien and Close Call Sports & Umpire Ejection Fantasy League will have a field day. Here is the clip with the ABQ radio call over it because it conveys the craziness way better than the Reno call.

MLB Scoring Changes

OF Ethan Conrad (Wake Forest Baseball) has seen his Draft stock rise considerably over the last calendar year. Following a productive Freshman season and summer, Conrad had an outstanding Sophomore year to the tune of a .389/.467/.704 slash line with 18 2B, a nation-leading 13 3B, 9 HR, 52 RBIs and 17 SB. His hot hitting didn't stop there, though, as on the Cape this summer he was both an All-Star (ASG MVP) and All-League selection after hitting .385/.433/.486 with 5 2B, 2 HR, 19 RBIs, and 19 SB. Conrad has an athletic, big league frame at 6'3" and 200-lbs. Simple setup in the box in which he stands fairly upright—albeit slightly hunched over—with a medium-high handset and holds the bat flat over his back shoulder. Minimal load, leg lift leads into a small stride. Conrad takes a direct path to contact and his barrel accelerates through the zone. Hand speed is above-average. It's a very compact, repeatable and under control operation. He has plus bat-to-ball skills and is consistently on the barrel. Last spring he ran an overall IZ contact rate of 91%, including 90% against FB and 94% against both SL and CH. This summer was a similar story, as his overall IZ contact rate was also 91% (93% against FB/CH, 91% against SL). Conrad can get trigger happy with FB in the top and/or outer-1/3 and has the tendency to chase secondaries down, though it hasn't hindered his production to this point. Tightening up his swing decisions a bit will help. Would give his hit tool a 55. Conrad has shown the ability to spray line drives to all parts of the field and is capable of driving the baseball into either gap. While he uses the whole field, his highest quality of contact comes to the pull side—which is also where all of his HR power to this point has come. There's present impact, however, and this spring he posted a Max EV of 109.4 and this summer his Max EV was 105.4. If he's able to get the ball up in the air more, increased HR numbers should follow suit. Power is a 50 right now. Corner OF profile defensively where his speed and athleticism translate well. Good instincts, can go and get balls in the gap or down the line. Arm is average. Alluded to it, but Conrad is also a plus runner who has a knack for taking an extra base on a ball in the gap or down the line. Most importantly, he knows how to run which helps his speed play up on the bases where he's an effective base stealer and chaos-causer. There's a lot to like tools-wise with Conrad and he figures to be the centerpiece of Wake Forest's lineup in 2025. Definite day 1 type this July, top-40 overall upside. (📽️: Marist Baseball)

SS Marek Houston (Wake Forest Baseball) is one of the premier college infielders in this year's Draft. After earning the starting SS job as a true Freshman, Houston had a standout summer with the Amsterdam Mohawks in which he hit .429/.557/.548 with 4 XBH and 13 RBIs in 17 games. He proceeded to break out last season to the tune of a .326/.434/.516 slash line with 16 2B, 8 HR, and 39 RBIs. Had an impressive summer that was split between the Cape and Team USA. Did what very few college players do anymore and started on the Cape, went to Team USA, and finished out the summer back on the Cape. Was a CCBL All-Star and hit .306/.465/.329 with more BB (26) than Ks (21). Lean, athletic build at 6'3" and 190-lbs. Pro body. Somewhat wide base in the box with a medium-high handset. Puts the majority of his weight on his back side. Minimal load in which he wraps his bat a bit. Small stride with average bat speed. Will eliminate his stride and widen his base in 2-strike counts. Takes a direct path to contact. Compact, contact-oriented operation. Does a nice job of consistently working inside the baseball. The most appealing part of Houston's offensive profile is how polished his hit tool is. Bat-to-ball skills are comfortably plus and last season he ran an overall IZ contact rate of 92%. Pitch recognition skills and swing decisions are both advanced, and this summer on the Cape he worked a remarkably low overall chase rate of 16% - including just 8% against SL. Will use the entire field. It's a bit of a cliche, but he hits the pitch where it's thrown. Hit tool is without a doubt a 55, but closer to a 60 than it is a 55. Biggest question mark right now is his impact and how much is in there. Flashed some pull side thump during the spring, but it's below-average power with wood. Again though, you're buying the hit tool. Adding impact both this year and beyond is key, though. Houston's calling card is undoubtedly his defense. Pro shortstop through and through. Silky smooth actions, range both up the middle and to his arm side. Comfortable attacking the baseball and throwing on the run/from different arm angles. Soft hands with an above-average arm. Besgrove worked quickly and efficiently all night, pounding the zone and trusting his defense behind him.
