Govt is all set to punish South India The Union government has now signalled that delimitation may be moved ahead without waiting for the Census after 2026, raising the possibility that the 2011 Census could become the base for redrawing Lok Sabha seats. For those who don’t know what delimitation is, it is the process of reallocating parliamentary seats among states in line with population changes It has a stated aim of preserving fair and proportional democratic representation. But this is where the debate becomes serious. Population trends across India have not moved uniformly A major reason is the difference in fertility rates among states. Most southern states—Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana—have already brought fertility below the replacement level of 2 Meanwhile, states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar continue to record comparatively higher fertility levels. If seat redistribution follows these numbers, the political balance could shift sharply The five southern states together may end up with around 164 Lok Sabha seats, whereas Uttar Pradesh and Bihar alone could together command nearly 222. The larger question, then, is philosophical as much as political: Should states that succeeded in stabilising population growth lose representation because of that success? Many in the South see this as a structural disadvantage, almost a democratic penalty for effective population management. Is delimitation being brought in through the “backdoor,” as alleged by the Opposition? No. Delimitation is a constitutional mandate under Articles 81 and 82, it is not a political choice, but a legal obligation. For decades, the number of Lok Sabha seats has remained frozen even as India’s population has grown significantly, from about 55 crore in 1971 to nearly 140 crore today. Today, each MP represents a much larger population, impacting effective representation and accessibility. Delimitation is therefore not just necessary for better governance, but a constitutional duty, one that the Government led by PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji is committed to fulfilling. Watch.

A recommendation I intend to submit to the Honorable Prime Minister. We should proceed with the delimitation exercise based on absolute population figures, utilizing a fixed benchmark such as 7,00,000 or 10,00,000 citizens per constituency. While this ensures that states with larger populations receive a significantly higher number of seats in the Lower House, that would not matter if we simultaneously empower the Rajya Sabha with Senate-like authorities to maintain federal equilibrium. Under this proposed system, equal and fixed representation in the Rajya Sabha would be granted to every state, regardless of size. Currently, representation is skewed; for instance, Uttar Pradesh holds 31 seats while Sikkim holds only one. By transitioning to a model where every state is allotted a fixed number of representatives (such as three or five), we ensure that every state’s vote carries the same weight. This reform would safeguard the interests of all states, granting each the legislative power to block bills detrimental to their specific regions and more effectively champion the cause of their people."

It's time for the centre to repay and reward us for our great role and contribution in nation-building for the last 50 years. The South now demands an exemption from the delimitation formula based on population just like UTs and smaller states in #NorthEast. Today, South has 130 out of 543 seats. It means a political proportion of around 24%. Political demand of the South is to increase this to 33% of Lok Sabha seats after delimitation. Anything less would reduce the South to a passive role as an audience in the political theatre of India. I will soon pass a resolution in my state assembly on this issue. But because of opposition unity and solidarity, the bill didn't pass. They got only 298 and they needed 362 if you go by 543 present and voting. So they felt hugely short of the two-thirds majority. And that was a humiliation. It was a setback for him. He didn't expect it. And I think, as a response to that humiliation, he has started on this, massive program to destabilize opposition parties. He's, you know, trying to break all opposition parties. But I can assure you that he's not going to succeed in getting a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha. He's trying similar tactics in the Rajya Sabha. But ultimately, it's two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha that matters. And all sorts of incentives are being offered, you know, in the mutual fund industry you offer different products and different schemes catering to the needs of individual investors. So, he's obviously offering a lot of incentives to individual MPs based on their needs and assessments. But, you know, it's, this is an assault on the Constitution. It's an assault on democracy." Claims made by Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah on delimitation are misleading and reflect a disregard for established facts. Tuesday was a black day for India. Friday has seen redemption in measures I could not have imagined. For the first time in more than 30 years, a bill introduced by the government has failed to pass in the Lok Sabha. I am glad that it is this bill, which was conceived with malicious intent and without any logic, that has been defeated. Parties that would ordinarily have been convinced of short-term benefits from an increase in seats have upheld oppositon unity to control the dictatorial tendencies of the government. It is a sign that a politics of principles still exists in India, that there is still hope for a brighter future. This is the turning point we have been waiting for. The self-declared, self-proclaimed, self-styled Chanakya of Indian politics assured his party and his Sahib that he was going to secure a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha on the delimitation bill. A total of 528 MPs were present and voted on the 17th of April. According to the Constitution, to pass that amendment, two-thirds of those present and voting were required. So, with 528 members present, they needed 352 votes. He got 298. So, obviously, all their calculations were wrong. Their assumptions were wrong. They did not anticipate this level of opposition, unity, and solidarity. They were humiliated, and it was visible on the faces of the Home Minister and the Prime Minister. Now they want to get the delimitation bill passed. So first, they did Operation Lotus in West Bengal, and then Operation Tiger in Maharashtra. The delimitation bill was passed on the 23rd September, 2023, but it was notified on the night of April 16, 2026. The real reason for '400 Paar' was that they could redo the Constitution or have a new Constitution to ensure their age-old bugbear, which is reservation. Their game plan is that this monsoon session should be dominated by delimitation.
