I've been to 50 countries now, but it was my trip in 2017 to the Maldives that made me feel we were making a big impact in the travel industry. I remember meeting with the PR team at Conrad Hotels Maldives. They said they wanted to become the top-followed Maldives hotel brand. So, we started posting content on Earthpix right away. By the time I left, their follower count had jumped from 32k to 120k. After returning, we ran a giveaway, pushing them over 200k followers and hotel bookings were at an all time high. That's why they contracted us in 2018 to announce the grand opening of their underwater villa, The Muraka. They even gave us a year's exclusivity, not letting any other travel bloggers or influencers stay and experience The Muraka that year. Our Muraka campaign got over 500 million views across all social platforms that year and some of our videos were featured on tv news channels. I have many stories like this. I don't always share them, but I'm really proud of what we've achieved at Earthpix, and of everyone who's been a part of our journey. We're just getting started.

On October 5, 2023, the village was set ablaze by the Hutu Nyatura militia, the FDLR, and the FARDC. Burundian troops, present as part of one of the many “peace agreements,” were camped on a hill just a few hundred meters away. They stood by, weapons at rest, in perfect complicity with the arsonists. The residents, having had time to flee to Bwiza in an area controlled by the M23, returned two months later after the zone was retaken by the latter. They found their village completely devastated. Since then, they have rebuilt it, but in a more concentrated manner: isolated homes—seen burning in the images—were deemed too difficult to defend. The work accomplished is impressive. Freshly cut wood bears witness to the recent reconstruction. During my daytime visit, only one generator was running. A few kilometers away, you can see the power line supplying Kabila’s farm, but no village benefits from it. These Congolese Tutsis, rooted in Masisi since time immemorial, have been driven from their lands three times in thirty years, the most recent being less than two years ago. They have been massacred, their cattle stolen or killed. Why would they trust the authorities in Kinshasa or the “international community”? One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts has reached a new low - even for him! He has described women attempting suicide or self-harm as 'attention seeking' while saying men who do the same are suffering a legitimate medical condition. He made the comments during Senate Estimates. Since ... well forever ... the discussions around suicide and self-harm has centred on men's experience. Women have only been an after thought but that is changing somewhat. Women attempt suicide or self-harm at much higher rates than men but men are more likely to die as a result of their attempts. We do know that 19% of women who suicide do so after experiencing domestic violence while suicide rates among women who are raped or sexually assaulted are also quite staggering. Research is slowly emerging showing how violence itself is a precursor to women ending their own lives or attempting to. And the Federal Government is holding an inquiry into domestic violence related suicide as I write. It's perfectly okay to discuss differing rates of suicides - and their causality - among women and men. For those who don’t like Blockie, I’ve got one for you that might change your mind: At the 2023 PGA where his life exploded, I followed him for ESPN in the final round (the one where he made the hole-in-one) and had the chance to speak to him on Sunday prior to the round when he was paired with Rory. Both he and his lovely wife Val gave me almost 20 minutes of their time and were so open and honest and offfered so many amazing stories I used on the air. No other person who was in his position with everything on the line would’ve done that. Nobody. I have also had him (and his son Dylan) on my podcast for Silver Club Golfing Society soon after that PGA and I didn’t have to jump through any hoops with his agent or anything. I even played a practice round with him at the ‘25 PGA Professional Championship and he couldn’t have been nicer. We all want athletes to speak their mind and let us in, and when they open up and say what’s on their mind they get ripped by social media. I don’t see the reason for the haters. My experience last have been nothing but 100% positive. Blockie is a star in my book.
