At least 44 people died and more than 100 were being treated for injuries after a roof collapsed at a nightclub in the capital of the Dominican Republic early Tuesday, authorities said. Crews were searching for potential survivors in the rubble and teams were still working to determine the total number of people who were present at the scene at the time of the incident. Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi and sister of seven-time Major League Baseball All-Star Nelson Cruz, was among the victims. She had called Dominican President Luis Abinader saying she was trapped and that the roof had collapsed, First Lady Raquel Abraje told reporters. Cruz died later at the hospital. The injured include former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel and legislator Bray Vargas. Merengue singer Rubby Pérez was performing when the roof collapsed, and his daughter said he was believed to be trapped.

With a heavy heart, I am forced to come to terms with the passing of an icon Madam Onyeka Onwenu. I grew up listening to her music in the 80’s and I remember meeting her at a concert at the Shell Club RA in 1988. She left an impression on me that carried on for decades. Her records were a favorite during family road trips in the 80’s and early 90’s whenever we travelled between east & west. In September 2018, I was blessed to have her come onboard as a Brand Ambassador for House of Lunettes and she said to me “Akin just tell me whatever you need, I am here to support you”. She was a sweet soul, full of life and left a trace of joy in every room she walked into. This happens almost every night in the Parker home. Mrs. Parker is 82 years old and lives with Alzheimer’s disease. Because of her illness, she has something called “sundowning.” At night, she often believes she has to leave the house to go to work, even though she retired many years ago. For the past eight months, her German Shepherd, Max, has learned this pattern. When Mrs. Parker gets out of bed and starts walking toward the front door, Max quickly goes to the door too. He stands in front of it and blocks the exit so she cannot go outside. If she keeps trying to move forward, Max gently takes her sleeve in his mouth and carefully guides her back inside the house. Before Max started doing this, Mrs. Parker wandered outside late at night in her pajamas several times. The police had to bring her home many times. After her family showed the security camera footage to her doctor, the doctor said Max was showing natural protective behavior. He was keeping her safe by instinct, not because he was trained to do it. Max is an incredibly loyal dog, and he truly deserves recognition. ❤

At 3:15 he came to the front desk and said — "I'd like to take her home. I think we need each other." I excused myself to the back room and sat on an overturned bucket and cried for a long time. An 11-year-old girl in #Kuwait has died after sustaining injuries from falling shrapnel in a residential area of the Capital Governorate, according to Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Sanad. The Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported that the child received first aid before being transported by ambulance to Amiri Hospital, where she was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later. Four members of her family are currently under medical observation at the hospital.
