More than 300 people tried to shelter themselves at the site 2,000 years ago in hope of evacuation... An ancient Roman beach buried nearly 2,000 years ago due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius has opened to the public in Italy after the completion of conservation work, in 2024. The busy city of Pompeii and the upmarket resort town of Herculaneum were smothered by a three-metre blanket of volcanic ash and pumice from the eruption in 79 AD. Many people were crushed or trapped in dwellings and temples where they took refuge. The following morning, a cloud of hot gas and ash swept in to suffocate the survivors. Many centuries later, the horrible reality was painstakingly unwrapped by archaeologists who restored the beach at the Herculaneum archaeological park by Gulf of Naples, giving visitors an experience of the town before the natural disaster struck. Herculaneum is located in modern-day Campania, Italy ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น. It is believed to be the site where more than 300 people tried to shelter themselves as they awaited evacuation by the army of Pliny the Elder, the Roman naval commander. The beach, which was discovered during 1980-90s, when skeletons of the inhabitants and other evidence of eruption were found during excavation, was reopened after years of restoration of work. "It was not only a restoration work but also a great research work because we know that representing a site, in an open-air archaeological place, also means being able to delve into scientific aspects: we carried out excavations and found remains and the passage of pyroclastic flows that hit the city in 79 AD with materials of all kinds," said Francesco Sirano, the director of the Herculaneum archaeological park. The most important discovery was of the โ€œlast fugitiveโ€ in 2021 โ€“ a 40-year-old man, trying to escape towards the sea with precious objects, reported ABC and NBC News affiliate KSBW. "Herculaneum, Pompeii, Oplontis: we are working on many projects", the Italian Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, was quoted as saying by the outlet. "In the budget law we have refinanced the excavations and there are construction sites that are active like never before and are revealing new treasures, which fuel the activity of scholars." The minister said the restoration of this archaeological area โ€œwill represent a opportunity for socio-economic developmentโ€. ๐ŸŽฅยฉ lookthroughhistory ยฉ The Independent #archaeohistories

The destruction caused by #AssamFloods is of an unimaginable scale. Over 9 lakh people across 1,800+ villages in 25 districts have been impacted by this calamity. We have lost 41 precious lives till date and thousands of livestock has been washed away. Cloudbursts upstream, coupled with localised heavy rainfall, 436% above normal, have led to flooding in villages that have not seen such devastation in recent history. We are responding with the full strength of a whole-of-government approach. 1๏ธโƒฃAll agencies, from the Indian Air Force and the NDRF to our State machinery, are working round the clock, carrying out rescue and evacuation operations by air and boat. 2๏ธโƒฃWe have set up over 148 relief camps, where close to 30,000 people are currently taking shelter. 3๏ธโƒฃOur teams are reaching as many affected families as possible with food, drinking water and other essential supplies. In the worst-affected districts alone, over 3,00,000 kg of rice and other essential relief materials have already been delivered, with more on the way. 4๏ธโƒฃWe are working closely with various departments and the Government of India to prepare a comprehensive long-term rehabilitation package for every affected family. 5๏ธโƒฃ Last but not the least, once the immediate crisis subsides, we will begin a structured dialogue with neighbouring States to establish a stronger coordination mechanism that can better protect our people from the impact of upstream cloudbursts and similar calamities in the future. Mamata Banerjee is scared !!! The Mamata Banerjee Administration has stooped to a new low of cowardice and fascism. The devastating fire at the Nazirabad; Anandapur Warehouse has already claimed over 20 innocent lives (with the toll still rising and DNA testing underway for charred remains) and several more missing. The unfortunate incident has left families shattered and exposed the complete lack of regulation regarding industrial & fire safety. Warehouses storing hazardous materials, operating illegally without NOC & fire safety audit. The blood rather ashes is on the hands of Mamata Banerjee (yet to visit), her fire minister Sujit Bose who arrived 32 hours late, and the entire corrupt administration that allowed this preventable tragedy. As a responsible Leader of Opposition I intended to visit the area, only after the rescue operation was over. But instead of accountability, the TMC Administration has unleashed its favorite weapon: suppression of truth and opposition by getting a prohibitory order under Section 163(2) BNSS issued, banning assembly of 5 or more persons within a 100-meter radius of the incident site from 5 PM on 28 January until 30 March 2026. This draconian order is nothing but a shameless, targeted conspiracy to block me from visiting the area, meeting grieving families, consoling victims, and leading a peaceful protest march against TMCโ€™s criminal negligence. They know the moment I reach Nazirabad/Narendrapur, the peopleโ€™s rage will boil over against this inefficient State Govt, the failures of the Mamata Banerjee Govt will be laid bare, and their lies will crumble. This is not law and order; this is state-sponsored strangulation of Democracy.

The Australian government does not deserve our trust, or our respect. Today, Minister Penny Wong sat back in her chair grappling for words, desperately looking for the right lie to tell. It is worse than dishonest - it is an absolute lack of care. Penny Wong came to this country when she was 8 years old. She came to a country that afforded her the ability to become who she is, and she is now doing her part to destroy it. Back in the 70โ€™s, when she came, Australia was a fair-minded place and a great place to be. Yet here she is... Here in Australia. Undermining our country and lying to our faces. Because she canโ€™t tell the truth. Because if she did, it would destroy any semblance of care for Australia tied to her old partyโ€™s Labor brand. It would say the quiet part out loud. The truth. The truth that the Albanese government is more interested in the fortunes of the ISIS brides, women who chose to leave this country to go and fight against our people, than those of us that canโ€™t find or afford a place to live here at home. I am tired of being told how to think by people that completely lack morals and couldnโ€™t care less. People that are elected and paid to operate in the national interest but always put their twisted ethics and back pockets ahead of our nation and our people. I donโ€™t know when Labor stopped caring about Australian workers or worse, when they started hating Australia, but they have and they do. The absolute lack of opposition, the lack of authentic choice has pushed us into a place where these absolute traitors to the interests of the people who pay them - goes entirely unchecked. We are careening out of control, unchecked migration, an energy grid that is just about to collapse, no industry to speak of, and no good reason to start or maintain a business in this place. It happened fast, but those of us who pay our taxes and take risks to make Australia a better place, are being undermined and white-anted by our politicians. The people we are forced to trust, and must pretend to respect, because they have the force of law on their side. Not because they are any good at their jobs. Not because they have earned our affection. No. Simply because they are in charge and there is little to nothing that can be done about it. It is becoming apparent that the two party system has outlived its useful life. Too much corruption, too many words too carefully chosen in a pantomime between to political forces that donโ€™t really want to change anything. They just want to have their go, to have their turn to jam their grubby hands into the till. Surely with this major and catastrophic failure by the so-called Honourable Minister Senator Wong, the people will be able to see through the veil and into the absolute and irresponsible lack of care at the heart of this deceitful Labor government. They lie about everything, and they can, because they donโ€™t have an opposition worthy of the title. I am growing more confident by the day that the only solution to our woes is a new political force, a fresh, Australia first force, that will act in the national interest and put all these corrupt and useless used-car salesmen red and blue in the dustbin of history. It canโ€™t come soon enough. Time is short. I just want Australia back.

It would have been amusing if it werenโ€™t so ironic. The man demanding the resignation of Indiaโ€™s Education Minister refuses to resign himself. It increasingly appears that the so-called protest march was deliberately left without leadership or direction, creating conditions in which anarchic elements could unleash violence and mayhem. When the situation spiralled out of control, many of the prominent faces associated with the protest were nowhere to be seen, some chose to get a burger, others sought engagement with the government, and still others simply disappeared from the scene. A word of caution to parents: please do not allow your children to become cannon fodder for politicians such as Arvind Kejriwal, Akhilesh Yadav, Chandrashekhar Azad, or others seeking political mileage. When protests turn violent, it is ordinary students and young people who face the consequences, not those who incited or encouraged them. Your children can get injured, traumatised, or even find themselves facing legal consequences if they become caught up in rioting or acts of vandalism. Those who mobilise them will not be there when it matters most. I am told that the Delhi Police has released those who were detained during the protest. At the same time, law enforcement agencies have a duty to act whenever public safety is threatened or public property is damaged. The events of the day revealed a simple truth: those claiming to lead the protest were conspicuously absent when the situation deteriorated. That should tell everyone who was truly expected to bear the cost.
