There is a dangerous pattern in this country: tragedy strikes, families grieve, leaders speak, investigations are promised, and then the country moves on until the next preventable tragedy. For years, Kenya has witnessed deadly school fires and preventable tragedies linked to overcrowding, poor emergency preparedness, and ignored safety concerns yet we do nothing. Our children deserve safe spaces to learn and rest, not death traps. This latest school fire must be the last one. Those who, through omission or commission, contributed to the deaths of these 16 children must be held criminally responsible. To all the grieving families, I am deeply sorry for your loss. May God comfort you in this time of pain. May the young souls lost in this preventable tragedy rest in peace.

UPDATE ON THE MURDER OF ABDULSAMAD JAMIU This morning, 27 April 2026, representatives from HQ Nigerian Army, led by Brigadier S. O. Buhari, visited the family to offer condolences and to inspect the scene of the incident. During the visit, they stated that they were unaware the house was fenced and that the room where the shooting occurred was located downstairs. This contradicts their earlier claim suggesting the death resulted from a “stray bullet.” The delegation expressed condolences and assured the family that the officers involved would be investigated and held accountable. The family has formally demanded the retraction of the initial statement and a public apology for what they consider an insult to the memory of their son. Although there was a promise to delete the statement, the family made it clear that trust has already been undermined, especially given that some military personnel had visited the scene the yesterday before issuing the statement in question. We reiterate our demand that those responsible for the killing of Abdulsalam Jamiu be brought to justice. This was not an accident. He was in his home; military men entered the premises, approached his room, and shot him through the door. Twice. This was not a mistake.

#WATCH | Delhi | On Supreme Court grants full pension to women SSC Officers denied permanent commission, Advocate SS Pandey says, “Today, Supreme Court has passed a historical order, the bench was presided by the CJI, in respect of women officers of all the three services – Army, Navy and Air Force. The SC has recognised the fact that since women officers were not being considered for PC, the inputs to derive the merits of the women officers have not been done properly because the reporting officers were not conscious of the fact that these Annual Confidential Reports and other credentials would be used for consideration of PC for the women officers… In the Army, the SC has already found that the women officers have been subjected to systemic discrimination through the cases of Babita Punia and Nitisha… The SC clearly held that all those officers who have completed 60% of qualifying service and were clear from the PC and vigilance angle will be considered and granted PC. The officers who have been victims of systemic discrimination will be permitted to serve for 20 years and will be given a pension on completion of 20 years… In the Air Force’s case, the consideration denied earlier was based on a 2019 policy in which the inputs that were taken into consideration were those that women officers could not have earned during their service. As a result, they were denied PC. Both the male and female officers have been granted consideration for PC or pension… The same goes with the Navy because it was also following a policy of no PC to either men or women… They have also been considered for PC… “
