Extremist settlers attacked Palestinians in some 20 locations across the West Bank on Saturday night, a security source told The Times of Israel, with assailants torching homes, vehicles and other property. Earlier on Saturday, Yehuda Sherman, an 18-year-old settler, was killed when a Palestinian-owned pickup truck hit the ATV he and his brother were traveling in close to the illegal settlement outpost where they lived. No casualties were immediately reported from the fires, but the Palestinian Red Crescent said three people were injured in beatings by settlers in the village of Jalud, and six others were injured in beatings in villages in the Jenin area. A statement from the IDF spokesperson said reports were received of “Israeli citizens who burned buildings and property, and disturbed the peace in the area.” The statement said troops were working to restore order, and added that Israel’s security forces “condemn violence of any kind and will continue working to protect residents’ security and order in the area.” There were, however, no reports of arrests, which are highly rare in instances of settler violence. 🚨🚨🚨 The Chinese military has simulated battles near Mexico and Cuba during a wargaming exercise — revealed toward the end of a report aired on state television CCTV on Dec 19 (lower right video; CCTV seems to have taken down the original video from its website but I’ve managed to stitch together one that’s practically the same except some on-screen captions.) Cuba, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, along with the Sea of Okhotsk and Taiwan, were among the locations of conflict scenarios visible on screens in the report showing PLA wargaming exercises. Despite closer economic ties with countries in the region, China has a minimal military presence in Latin America. But the fact that the PLA is modelling potential conflicts there suggests a shift in the Chinese military’s global ambitions. One screen in the report showed red and blue opposing unit “indicators” — represented by aircraft and ships — manoeuvring near the coasts of Cuba and Mexico. Some of the blue side congregated near Houston, Texas, and headed southeast into the Gulf of Mexico, while the red side was seen in the Caribbean Sea. In a typical PLA drill, the red side usually represents the Chinese military while the blue side is the enemy. During the CCTV report, a close-up focused on Cuba showed the lines of trajectory of aircraft and ships in the region in what was likely a simulation of a tactical operation. Chinese researchers were seen pointing to the screen and discussing the situation. The footage was recorded at a PLA wargaming event held in Xuchang, Henan province, which was attended by 20 units from across the military and its academies. Dozens of simulation systems were demonstrated — all of them developed in China. The report did not provide further information about any of the conflict scenarios. In another map seen in the report, the red side was shown clustered near Russia’s far eastern coast while blue indicators were positioned over Hokkaido in Japan and the disputed Kuril Islands. Taiwan also featured at the center of a map in one of the wargaming systems shown in the report. Beijing sees the self-governed island as part of China, to be reunited by force if necessary. Most countries, including the United States, do not see Taiwan as an independent state, but many oppose any forcible change to the status quo. Washington is also committed to supplying Taiwan with weapons for its defense. With tensions rising in the region in recent years, the PLA has held frequent exercises around Taiwan and also conducted joint training with Russia in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan. The Chinese and Russian air forces held a joint patrol earlier this month, with two Russian Tu-95 bombers flying across the Sea of Japan to join two Chinese H-6 bombers over the East China Sea. That came after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi enraged Beijing by suggesting last month that Japan could intervene militarily in the event of a conflict in the Taiwan Strait. The CCTV report also showed the PLA simulating an air battle between Chinese J-16 fighters and French-made Rafale fighter jets. Details of PLA war games are rarely revealed – they are usually highly classified. 🚨 FLORIDA MAN SAYS DOLPHINS KIDNAPPED HIM AND FORCED HIM TO BUILD AN UNDERWATER CITY Reportedly, deputies in Lee County found a man lying on the beach before sunrise Monday, soaked, dehydrated, and drawing architectural blueprints in the sand. When they asked what happened, his story got bizarre fast. He claims a pod of dolphins dragged him underwater while he was swimming and took him to a location about 40 feet below the surface. There, he says, they forced him to help build entire underwater structures including cities, towns, and condo-like buildings. According to the man, the dolphins communicated using clicks and had a leader named “Gerald.” He also claims Gerald somehow created an air pocket that allowed him to breathe underwater while he worked. The man says he spent three days helping construct the structures before the dolphins finally released him and sent him back to shore. But not before telling him something chilling. They would return for “phase two.” Doctors treated him for dehydration but reportedly found no head trauma or signs of mental confusion. 🐟 Angler Fish spotted swimming vertically to the surface on the coast of Tenerife It could be the first recorded sighting in the world of a living adult black seadevil or abyssal anglerfish (*Melanocetus johnsonii*) in broad daylight and at the surface! A legendary fish that few people have had the privilege of observing alive. Until now, existing records corresponded to larvae, dead adult specimens, or footage captured by submarines. Emerging from the abyssal depths in vertical swimming, just 2 km off the coast of Tenerife and during a research campaign on pelagic sharks organized by the NGO Condrick-Tenerife (IG @Condrik_tenerife), biologist Laia Vilaró (IG Laia Vlr) spotted this creature at the surface. Shortly after, biologists Marc Martín (IG @vidamarina.tenerife), Antonio Sabuco (IG 山田三郎), and I (IG @jara.natura) recorded spectacular and rare images of the animal. ALAN YENTOB’S CRACKED ACTOR FILM IS FIFTY TODAY “I’m just the space cadet...he’s the commander…” * Around this time on the evening of Sunday 26th January 1975, Bowie fans were recovering from the 10:15pm broadcast of Alan Yentob's fifty-minute BBC 1 Cracked Actor documentary, which was part of the Omnibus series. Fifty years later it's almost impossible to calculate just how important that screening was to Bowie-starved fans in the UK. In America, not only did followers of the man and his music have the Diamond Dogs/Philly Dogs tours, but they also enjoyed TV broadcasts of The 1980 Floor Show, Ziggy Stardust The Motion Picture and The Dick Cavett Show. After Bowie’s 70s TOTPs appearances and his first proper television interview on Russell Harty Plus in January 1973, there had been little to sate the appetite of the hungry Bowie fan on UK television. So Cracked Actor came as a very welcome oasis in an otherwise dry spell of Bowie TV. Filmed in California and Philadelphia during the legendary Diamond Dogs Tour of 1974, it captured Bowie at a transitional stage in his life, then again, weren’t they all? The BBC had unique access to the man on and off stage, in the recording studio and while travelling. This gave fans a rare glimpse of the private Bowie and it made for compelling viewing. As with the aforementioned UK TV appearances, Cracked Actor had a profound effect on fans. It was their first real glimpse of the incredible live presentations that never reached the UK and despite the all-access nature of the documentary, it only added to the Bowie mystique.
