.Naval: Look at reality the way it is. Try to take yourself out of the equation. “Labels like pessimist, optimist, cynic, introvert, extrovert—these are very self limiting. Humans are very dynamic. There are times when you feel like being introverted. There are times when you feel like being extroverted. There are contexts in which you’ll be pessimistic. There are contexts in which you’ll be optimistic. Leave all those labels alone. It’s better just to look at the problem at hand. Look at reality the way it is. Try to take yourself out of the equation, in a sense. Obviously you’re involved. But motivated reasoning is the worst kind of reasoning. You’re not going to find truth through highly motivated reasoning. You have to be objective. And objective means trying to take yourself out of it as much as possible, or at least your personality out of it as much as possible. And so to the extent you run with this thick identity and personality, it’s going to cloud your judgment. It’s going to try and lock you into the past. If you say, ‘I’m a depressed, unhappy person—I’m going to be unhappy.’ That’s a way of locking yourself into your past. Even saying, ‘I have trauma, I have PTSD,’ yeah, you feel something—there are memories, there are flashes, there are occasional bad feelings. But don’t define yourself by it because then you’ll lock it into your identity and you’re just going to loop on it. It’s better to stay flexible because reality is always changing and you have to be able to adapt to it. Adaptation is also intelligence, adaptation is survival. Adaptation is kind of how you’re here. You’re here because you’re an adapter and your ancestors were adapters. So to adapt you’ll have to see things clearly and if you’re seeing them through your own identity, it’s going to cloud your judgment.”

This is a sweet video... I like to tell people that your family is not your fate. You’re not doomed to become your parents or to live exactly as you lived in your own childhood. If you came from a broken home, full of anger, constant arguing, and disorder, you don’t have to repeat that. You can escape it. But, almost paradoxically, you don’t escape it by obsessing over how you were wronged in your childhood. That usually pulls you right back into it. That’s why so many men who swear they’ll never become their fathers end up doing exactly that. You escape it by being future-focused for the good of others. You escape it by building something that blesses people beyond yourself, in your community, in your church, and especially in your family. You can be the link in a new chain. God brings beauty from ashes, and he has a habit of extinguishing a hellish heritage and, through a bold-hearted, repentant man, replacing it with the beginnings of a heritage shaped by heaven. But “your family is not your fate” cuts both ways. Maybe you’re not the first link, but the second or third in a godly heritage. You were blessed with advantages, growing up in church, reading the Bible, living in a home with present parents. If you take that for granted, your life will look very different from theirs, and not in a good way. The good life, as the Bible defines it, grows out of a Christian who wakes up and asks the LORD, “How can I obey you today, for your glory and for the good of others into the future?”

Knock off the negative self talk! Changing the words you say to yourself literally rebuild your brain in ways that help you or hurt you. Here's the science of one of the words you say to yourself matter: When you use criticizing language in your internal voice, your brain picks up on that and turns on the parts that are related to defending you from physical danger. Your brain hears your mind saying something harmful, and assumes that you're under attack. This affects your physiology, keeps you in a fight or flight response, and elevates your blood pressure and cortisol levels. In other words, when you attack yourself internally, your body gets the message and you literally feel like you're at war. On the other hand, research shows that when you use compassionate language to yourself, you don't magically make all your problems go away. What happens is that your brain area is related to problem-solving, calmness, and feeling hopeful, come alive. This set the filters in your reticular activating system to begin to look for possibility and not danger. The first commandment of self brain surgery is that I must relentlessly refuse to participate in my own demise. Using harmful words to yourself is literally committing malpractice against your own brain and your own life. So, and I say this with love, knock it off. Be kind to yourself. In a world full of difficulties, you deserve at least one ally. And your brain needs to hear encouraging language so I can do a better job of showing you a path forward instead of keeping you stuck. Jeremiah 29:11 says that God has a plan to give you hope and the future. Don't hinder his ability to do that by blocking your brain from being able to see what might already be there. Send this to a friend who needs an ally. Save this for the next time you find yourself feeling afraid. And follow me for connections between neuroscience and scripture every day that will help you flourish in your life. Click the link in my bio to learn more about my New York Times.
