INF Kodey Shojinaga (Kansas Baseball) is an intriguing Sophomore-eligible prospect. Was outstanding as a true Freshman and hit .378/.421/.526 with 11 2B, 6 HR, and 32 RBIs. Also slashed .326/.396/.349 across 11 games on the Cape. Shojinaga was named Co-Freshman of the Year in the Big 12 and earned a Team USA invitation. Medium build at 5'10", 190-lbs with some physicality in the lower-half. Slightly open front side in the box with a normal handset. Holds bat horizontally over his back shoulder with the barrel pointed slightly back. Medium-high leg kick, but the stride itself is small. Little bit of a bat wrap, but he's consistently on time. Average bat speed. Hit over power profile right now, but Shojinaga has an advanced feel for the barrel and plus bat-to-ball skills. Last season, he sported a 93% overall IZ contact rate. Approach is sound, but sometimes chases down/away. Does a nice job of using the whole field and working inside the baseball. Would put a 55 on the pure hit tool. Sound defender at 2B with above average arm strength and makes the plays he needs to make. He has quick hands and some range in either direction. Shojinaga also has experience catching, and got some reps behind the plate this summer for Team USA. Will be interesting to see what it would look like if he focused on catching - actions need refining, but the arm strength is there. Shojinaga will need to really hit, and he's capable of doing so. This July, he profiles as a 5th-8th round pick.

LHP Ben Abeldt (TCU Baseball) is a name to follow closely this spring. Enjoyed a strong Freshman year in which he worked a 3.60 ERA with 71 Ks to 24 BB in 55 IP. Was dominant last spring and pitched his way to a 1.83 ERA with 54 Ks to just 16 BB across 44.1 IP. Two-time Team USA invitee. Standard pitchers' frame at 6-foot-3 and 210-pounds. Added noticeable strength and physicality to it between '23 and '24. Some natural funk and deception in his delivery. Uncomfortable look, especially for LHH. Works exclusively on the 1B side of the rubber which makes it even tougher for LHH. Long, loose arm stroke and attacks from a low-three quarter slot. Big time crossfire. Abeldt relies heavily on his fastball (threw it 79% of the time in '24) that sits in the 91-94 MPH range. Was up to 96 during the spring and up to 98 over the summer. Run and ride through the zone with particular life on his arm side. Like a lot of the low-release lefties who have a little giddy up on their heaters, it's generates the most whiffs when located on the inner-1/2 and/or top-1/2 of the zone. Does a nice job of staying off the barrel with it, 23% whiff and OBA of .208 last spring. Go-to secondary offering is his low-80s slider. Long, sweeping life with some late bite at times. Not to beat a dead horse, but just a brutal look for lefties; Abeldt will release the pitch from essentially behind their backs. Legit swing-and-miss pitch that's effective against both right and lefthanded hitters. 45% miss rate last spring, comfortably a 55. Closer to a 6 than a 55. Third pitch right now is a low-80s CH for which he's still gaining a feel. Gets good separation off his FB (averaged 10 MPH off) and does a nice job of killing spin. Natural fade to the arm side and will occasionally flash some tumbling life. Profiles as an effective option against RHH. Strike-throwing ability is above-average. The key for Abeldt this season is selling his ability to start. Has made just 2 starts in his collegiate career and could headline TCU's rotation in '25. Look for both the SL and CH usage (especially the SL) to tick up. Curious to see how he fares in more extended looks. Easy comp is former Miami LHP Rafe Schlesinger. 3rd-4th round type this July.

The best exercise for the brain youโ€™ve probably never seen. According to Michael J. Laveryโ€™s book โ€œWhole Brain Powerโ€, using a 4-pound sledge hammer to bounce a golf ball up and down dramatically amplifies both your neurological and physical demands Massive Central Nervous System (CNS) Activation The sheer weight of a 4-lb sledge forces the CNS to fire at a much higher intensity. To keep a lively golf ball bouncing on a heavy, rigid piece of steel, your brain has to send incredibly powerful, rapid-fire signals to your muscles. This level of resistance forces maximum motor unit recruitment, teaching your nervous system to fire more efficiently under tension. Elite Grip and Forearm Strength Lavery heavily emphasizes the link between hand/grip strength and brain health, viewing the hands as the direct external extension of the central nervous system. Bouncing a ball requires a loose, reactive wrist to absorb and redirect impact, but holding a 4-lb hammer requires immense isometric grip strength. Managing that weight leverages extreme stress onto the forearms, wrists, and fingers, building dense, functional grip strength that standard lifting rarely touches. RHP Matt Scott (Stanford Baseball) is one of the premier college arms in this year's Draft. After a solid Freshman season that was split between the bullpen and the rotation, Scott this year anchored the Stanford rotation and collected a career-high 103 strikeouts against 36 walks across 80 innings. Earned a Team USA invite for the second straight summer. Scott has an XL, workhorse frame at 6-foot-7 and 247-pounds with plenty of strength and physicality throughout. Quiet, "checkpoint-like" delivery. Small side step towards 1B side, gathers himself and breaks into the rest of his operation. Attacks from a high-three quarter slot. Low effort, does a nice job of staying connected and in-sync for someone of his stature. FB sits in the 93-96 range, but will routinely touch 97/98. Tons of carry through the zone, averaged 22.5" of IVB last year. At its best when located in the top-1/2 of the zone, which is also where it generates most of its whiffs. Just needs to stay out of the middle. Threw it 62% of the time and generated a pretty impressive miss rate of 26%, though I think it can become even more effective if he's able to hone in on his command of it. 55 pitch right now, eventual 60 if some of the low hanging fruit is cleaned up. Supplements his FB with a mid-to-upper-80s gyro SL. I actually think Scott's feel for the SL is on par, if not better, than his feel for the heater. Effective against both right and lefthanded hitters. True, hard gyro look against LHH. Will flash more two-plane tilt against RHH with some sharpness to it. Another 55 pitch that last year had a 40% miss rate. Scott needs to up the usage on his split-change. Threw it just 6% of the time last year and I think it's his best secondary pitch. Legit weapon against LHH. Averaged nearly 12 MPH off his FB and he does an excellent job of killing spin on it; averaged 866 RPMs last season. Essentially falls off a table as it approaches the plate. Serious tumbling life with a bit of arm side fade. 48% miss across a limited sample in '24, I'd give it a 60. Command and control are both average, if not a tick above. Little-to-no reliever risk. Really like the body and stuff. Projects to be one of the first few college arms off the board this July and is a potential first-rounder.

OF Ethan Conrad (Wake Forest Baseball) has seen his Draft stock rise considerably over the last calendar year. Following a productive Freshman season and summer, Conrad had an outstanding Sophomore year to the tune of a .389/.467/.704 slash line with 18 2B, a nation-leading 13 3B, 9 HR, 52 RBIs and 17 SB. His hot hitting didn't stop there, though, as on the Cape this summer he was both an All-Star (ASG MVP) and All-League selection after hitting .385/.433/.486 with 5 2B, 2 HR, 19 RBIs, and 19 SB. Conrad has an athletic, big league frame at 6'3" and 200-lbs. Simple setup in the box in which he stands fairly uprightโ€”albeit slightly hunched overโ€”with a medium-high handset and holds the bat flat over his back shoulder. Minimal load, leg lift leads into a small stride. Conrad takes a direct path to contact and his barrel accelerates through the zone. Hand speed is above-average. It's a very compact, repeatable and under control operation. He has plus bat-to-ball skills and is consistently on the barrel. Last spring he ran an overall IZ contact rate of 91%, including 90% against FB and 94% against both SL and CH. This summer was a similar story, as his overall IZ contact rate was also 91% (93% against FB/CH, 91% against SL). Conrad can get trigger happy with FB in the top and/or outer-1/3 and has the tendency to chase secondaries down, though it hasn't hindered his production to this point. Tightening up his swing decisions a bit will help. Would give his hit tool a 55. Conrad has shown the ability to spray line drives to all parts of the field and is capable of driving the baseball into either gap. While he uses the whole field, his highest quality of contact comes to the pull sideโ€”which is also where all of his HR power to this point has come. There's present impact, however, and this spring he posted a Max EV of 109.4 and this summer his Max EV was 105.4. If he's able to get the ball up in the air more, increased HR numbers should follow suit. Power is a 50 right now. Corner OF profile defensively where his speed and athleticism translate well. Good instincts, can go and get balls in the gap or down the line. Arm is average. Alluded to it, but Conrad is also a plus runner who has a knack for taking an extra base on a ball in the gap or down the line. Most importantly, he knows *how* to run which helps his speed play up on the bases where he's an effective base stealer and chaos-causer. There's a lot to like tools-wise with Conrad and he figures to be the centerpiece of Wake Forest's lineup in 2025. Definite day 1 type this July, top-40 overall upside. (๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ: Marist Baseball)

I spent my Saturday mapping the setups that matter most for next week. The market is still searching for direction ๐Ÿ‘‡ Semiconductors are losing momentum. Software is holding up. Select mega caps are quietly starting to reclaim relative strength. Hereโ€™s the watchlist and recording: $SPX: Failed breakout above 7530 and reversed sharply. Still trading inside a tightening triangle. Holding 7400 keeps the range intact. Reclaiming 7500 would shift the bias back higher. Losing 7400 opens 7300, then 7240. $QQQ: Failed breakout and back inside its range. Watching for either a reclaim of the highs or a break lower from consolidation. $IWM: Still one of the stronger indices. Broke to fresh all-time highs this week. Extended short term, but the trend remains constructive. $BTC: Showing relative strength versus equities but still below the 200-day moving average. No trade for now. $AAPL: One of the strongest charts on the board. AI chip headlines and foldable iPhone reports fueled the move. Watching a break of Fridayโ€™s highs toward all-time highs. $MSFT: Quietly improving. Reclaimed the 9-day and 20-day moving averages. Above 400 becomes much more interesting. $NFLX: Failed breakdown continues to work. Last weekโ€™s 75 reclaim is now extending higher. Still one of the stronger mega-cap charts. $NVDA: Semiconductors continue to weaken. Rejected the 9-day and drifting back toward the 200-day. Better opportunities elsewhere for now. $TSLA: Ugly reversal despite beating delivery expectations. Rejected 432 and finished near 392. Needs 400 reclaimed before becoming interesting again. $AMZN: Quiet relative strength. Still a difficult trade, but worth monitoring if mega caps continue to rotate higher. $GOOGL: Holding up better than many peers but still lacking a clean technical trigger. $SMH: Losing momentum. Watching closely as semiconductors continue to weaken. $MSTR: Bitcoin strength is helping. Worth keeping on the radar. $ADBE: Quiet recovery underway. Watching 225. $COIN: Showing improving relative strength alongside crypto. $HOOD: Expansion into 30 European countries fueled the recent rally. Watching 120 closely after todayโ€™s rejection. $PLTR: Failed breakdown continues to recover. Holding above 125 keeps the recovery thesis alive. $MA: Strong recovery back above the 200-day moving average. $V: Similar setup to Mastercard. Quiet accumulation after months of weakness. $PYPL: Improving technically. Worth monitoring if payment stocks continue rotating higher. $XYZ: Last weekโ€™s breakout worked almost perfectly. Above 82 opens another leg higher. $LLY: Healthcare leadership remains intact. Watching the bull flag and eventual breakout above 1238. $CRWD: Holding up well after the split. Watching the 200 level closely. $BAC: One of the stronger financials. Watching for a breakout into new highs. $GS: Weak relative to peers. $C: Also lagging despite strength elsewhere in financials. $WFC: Pulling back while BAC leads. $PANW: Strong continuation this week. Watching 360 after a brief pause. $DDOG: Still constructive but needs a breakout from the current lower-high structure. $NET: Similar setup to DDOG. Watching for software continuation. $MDB: Holding 365. Could become interesting if software stays strong. $HIMS: Quietly grinding higher. $UNH: Strong recovery. Watching 430. $AVGO: Breaking below the 200-day moving average. Semis continue to deteriorate. $MU: Lost the 1000 level after an impressive run. Momentum cooling. $SNDK: Continued downside after losing 2000. 1850 remains the next major area. $LRCX: Another semiconductor under pressure. $MRVL: Watching for either a failed breakdown or continuation lower. Overall theme: Software continues to hold up better than semiconductors. Several mega-cap names are quietly showing improving relative strength. Financials are becoming more selective. The tape still rewards patience more than aggression. AAPL, MSFT, NFLX, BAC, XYZ, LLY, and CRWD are some of my favorite charts going into next week.

Look forward to following LHP Landon Beidelschies (Arkansas Baseball) closely this season. After spending his Freshman season in the bullpen, Beidelschies last year made the jump to the rotation and pitched his way to a 4.15 ERA with 91 Ks to 31 BB across 84.2 IP. Physical build at 6'3" and 225-pounds with particular strength in his lower-half. Simple operation that has improved and become more powerful since his Freshman year (when this video was taken). Ultra-abbreviated arm stroke and attacks from a three-quarters slot. Blocks well with his lead leg, really drives back side through. Beidelschies' FB sits in the 91-94 range, but has been up to 98 with some carry at the top of the zone. He'll need to miss more bats with it, though. That will come if he's able to improve his control of the offering which, in turn, would help optimize its shape. Most effective in the top-1/2, where it gets over the barrel of opposing hitters. His calling cards are his secondary offerings. Beidelschies will throw his mid-80s gyro SL to both right and lefthanded hitters, though it is much more effective against LHH (they hit just .135 against it in '24). It will flash two-plane tilt with some late depth. Can back foot it at times against RHH. Curious to see if he's able to add some teeth to it this spring and beyond. 41% miss rate last spring. Mid-to-upper-80s CH is an effective weapon against RHH, who hit just .200 against it last season. Was impressed with the strides he made with the pitch - it's clear he became more confident in it and was throwing it with more conviction. Flashed plus with big time late tumble - that "falling off the table" action. Threw it just 11% of the time last year (generated a 46% miss rate), but I'd like to see that tick up in 2025. Strike-throwing across the board took a step in the right direction between '23 and '24. Average command and control. Beidelschies will be a key part of Arkansas' rotation this spring, during which he'll have the opportunity to cement himself as a pro starter. 3rd-5th round type right now.

Caleb Durbin immediately jumps off the page as yet another breakout candidate acquired by Boston this offseason. On the surface, Durbin's production isn't necessarily eye-popping. As a rookie in '25: โšพ๏ธ .721 OPS โšพ๏ธ 6% BB / 10% K โšพ๏ธ .312 xwOBA โšพ๏ธ 105 wRC+ โšพ๏ธ 2.6 fWAR So, what stands out regarding Durbin? I. Elite Swing Decisions & Whiff-Ability. Facing major league pitching for the first time in his career, Durbin registered the 5th-best K% (10%) in MLB last year. His 94% zCon rate (T-5th in MLB) is also elite. Durbin's whiff% and chase% also ranked inside the 95th percentile (or better). We're talking about a bat with some similar contact traits like we see in Jacob Wilson, for example, but with far less chase and a bit more pullside thump. He squares up the ball well (33% โ€” 95th PCTL) and pairs that ability with taking a steady amount of walks. Point blank, the 25-year-old is a demon at limiting whiff. II. Power Surge? It's All in the Pull Air%. A gigantic reason it's so easy to pencil Durbin in as a breakout candidate is his fantastic park fit at Fenway. As a rookie, Durbin turned in an above-average 41% pull rate, plus an even-better 20% pull air rate. Utilizing that approach with a big target in left field will work wonders for his OPS. I don't expect Durbin to mash 20+ HR out of nowhere, but I'd certainly bank on seeing a number of flyouts simply turn into doubles or homers at home. III. Quality Defense. Breslow talked a lot about upgrading defense, and this move certainly does that. I've been very vocal since the start of the offseason that Mayer at 2B, not 3B, would be my preference for a multitude of reasons. Durbin (who can play all over the infield), enters the building as a plus defender at 3B. As a rookie, Durbin turned in 2 OAA, 5 DRS, 5 rPM, and 1 FRV at the hot corner. Sliding Mayer over to second base allows for easier platoon management with Romy Gonzalez โ€” who saw an increase in his defensive production at 2B a year ago โ€” and yes, is an upgrade over Alex Bregman's 1 DRS in 2025. IV. Handling Velo. Something that shouldn't get overlooked is Durbin's ability to handle velocity โ€” a department the Red Sox obviously needed to upgrade in after last season. In '25 vs. FA-types 94+ mph: โšพ๏ธ .258 BA โ†’ .275 xBA โšพ๏ธ .350 SLG โ†’ .375 xSLG โšพ๏ธ .319 wOBA โ†’ .337 xwOBA โšพ๏ธ 8% whiff rate โ€” โ€” โ€” Overall, I'm really ecstatic about the Durbin acquisition. This is FAR better than signing Suarez and calling it a day, imo. Can't forget Durbin is a guy the Red Sox have under team control for a while now (2032 UFA!). Utilizing Harrison โ€” who's name has been yanked around between trade talks or a move to the bullpen โ€” is a great piece of business. The comp pick is also massive, but we'll talk more about that soon. I think at his best, Durbin could lead off for the Red Sox by the end of '26. A legit breakout candidate and bag stealing threat with a high floor thanks to limited swing-and-miss and good defense. Really looking forward to see him more in camp.

1B Tanner Thach (UNCW Baseball) is another college bat to keep close tabs on this season. Thach was drafted by the Giants in the 18th round of the 2022 draft but decided to honor his commitment to the Seahawks. Thach made a significant impact in his first year on campus and posted a .290/.356/.544 slash line with 11 2B, 15 HRโ€”a UNCW single-season freshman recordโ€”and 68 RBIs. He outdid himself in 2024 and hit .324/.406/.700 with 11 2B, a UNCW single-season record 27 HR and 75 RBIs in 61 games. Thachโ€™s production didnโ€™t end there, though, as he was named a Cape League all-star, hitting .275/.367/.493 with 6 doubles, 8 HR and 25 RBIs. Thach has a strong, physical build at 6โ€™4โ€ and 220-lbs. He has a crouched stance in the box with an open front side and a medium-high handset. Itโ€™s a bit of a noisy load in which he drops and drifts his hands, but Thach does possess plenty of bat speed. He has a steep, uphill swing path, and itโ€™s a violent operation that is geared towards getting the ball up in the air and doing damage. However, it can get long at times. Thachโ€™s carrying tool is undoubtedly his immense power. He has established a now-lengthy track record of power production with both metal and wood, and he has zero issue tapping into it on a game-to-game basis. Thach has home run power to all fields, though his highest quality of contact comes to the pull side. He gets the ball up in the air on a consistent basis, and when he catches the baseball on the sweet spot, it flies. Thach posted maximum exit velocities during the spring and summer of 113.5 mph and 103.1 mph, respectively. At the start of the summer, he would sometimes unnecessarily sell out to get to his power which caused him to top-spin line drives to the pull side, but as the season progressed he was able to break that habit. Thach has plus in-game power to all fields. The biggest key going forward for Thach is for him to continue to make enough contact to get to his power on a regular basis. His bat-to-ball skills are fringy, though he did post a 90% in-zone contact rate against all fastballs. Like a lot of hitters, the root of Thachโ€™s contact struggles are secondary offerings. Heโ€™ll have difficulty at times picking up spin out of the hand which leads to both miss and chase. Thach will also tend to whiff and chase against heaters that are either elevated or on the outer-half of the plate. However, he does handle velocity well and last season he hit .533/.588/1.033 against all fastballs 92+. While Thach feasts on righthanded pitching, he hit just .246/.321/.551 last season against lefties. Thachโ€™s power is tremendous, but heโ€™ll need to add a coat or two of polish to his hit-ability as he transitions into professional baseball. First base isnโ€™t the flashiest defensive profile, but Thach moves well around the bag and is a strong athlete at the position. Heโ€™s not afraid to range into the four-hole and he is a reassuring anchor on the right side of the infield. Thach has an advanced baseball sense, a trait that shines on a game-to-game basis. While he wonโ€™t pitch professionally, expect Thach to log some innings this spring for UNCW. His fastball tops out in the low 90s and flashes some hop in the top of the zone, but heโ€™ll also mix in a mid-70s curveball and a low-80s changeup. The cherry on top with Thach is his makeup, both on and off the field. Itโ€™s impossible to stick a grade on it because itโ€™s a 90 on the 20-80 scale.
