SURPRISE — we’re seeing double! 🦒🦒 Two weeks ago, we shared that the Zoo welcomed a female giraffe calf and that our friends at the TODAY Show were helping us pick her name … but the evening following that announcement, we welcomed a SECOND female calf! 🥹💕 Born just 13 days apart, the girls share the same dad, Apollo, but have different moms — Kala welcomed the first calf, and Acacia welcomed the newest little one. And now, they're both out on habitat with the herd! After spending time bonding with their moms and meeting the rest of the giraffe herd behind the scenes, our adorable duo has officially made their African Savanna debut (with a little soft launch yesterday 🤭). We're also excited to share that TODAY has officially announced the winning name for Kala's calf: Kumi! Kumi is Swahili for "10," honoring the fact that she is Kala's 10th calf. We're still finalizing a name for Acacia's little girl, but she's already easy to spot! Acacia is a Rothschild's giraffe, while a majority of our herd is made up of reticulated giraffes. She passed along a bit of her unique patterning to her calf through the darker brown coloring on her lower legs. We've affectionately nicknamed them her "shin guards" since she arrived during the Summer of Soccer in DFW. ⚽️🦒 We can't wait to watch these two girls grow up together — and now you can, too! 🥰
