[KWAZULU-NATAL PROTESTERS TO REFRAIN FROM CRIMINALITY] Police in KwaZulu-Natal are reminding those who stage protests, plan, organise and or participate in marches that they must do so within the perimeters of the law. Police have manned several marches in Durban and other parts of the province which are mainly targeted on foreign nationals. There are also video clips circulating on social media showing acts of lawlessness during certain marches. As much as it is a constitutional right to march, the rights of those marching must never infringe the rights of those who are not. No civilian has the right to search a fellow civilian and request or demand any form of identification. Only law enforcement officers are authorised to stop, search, and request individuals to produce documentations that permit them to be in the country. Police have also noted that several shops, owned by both South Africans and foreign nationals, have remained closed following threats of violence from certain individuals who were part of a march. Police wish to remind residents that intimidation can constitute a criminal offence and people must refrain from threatening others. Assaulting another person, whether a foreign national or not, is a criminal offence and police will not standby and watch when the law is being broken. Public Order Police officers will continue to monitor marches, ensuring that the is stability, law and order. The management of police in KwaZulu-Natal will have a meeting with the organisers of the marches soon in order to have a common understanding and provide assistance and clarity where needed. It is illegal for a foreigner to be in the country without proper documentation, however, only mandated law enforcement officers can arrest undocumented foreign nationals and detain them pending deportation processes. Anyone who has information about illegal activities, whether committed by locals or foreign nationals, must tip-off the police so that the information can be operationalised. Doing the right things the wrong way, such as taking the law into someoneโ€™s hands, can lead to unintended consequences of being in conflict with the law.

Liberal MP starts petition to allow foreign students and migrant workers facing deportation to remain in Canada Amandeep Sodhi is calling for foreign students and migrant workers facing deportation to be granted permanent residency and provided with federal aid. On Thursday's live stream, Tamara Ugolini and Alexa Lavoie discussed a new story from Blacklock's Reporter that shows Liberal MP Amandeep Sodhi of Brampton Centre has launched a petition to allow foreign students and migrant workers facing deportation to be granted permanent residency. โ€œCanada must provide clear timelines and realistic pathways to permanence for those who have already demonstrated their commitment to this country,โ€ reads Petition E-6940, sponsored by Sodhi. According to official estimates, there are currently over three million foreigners in Canada who are on either valid or expired temporary permits. The petition introduced by the Liberal MP not only calls for foreign students and migrant workers facing deportation to remain in Canada, but it also calls for taxpayer funding for "temporary residents facing status insecurity and distress". In addition to this, it calls on Parliament to โ€œpublicly recognize that international students and temporary workers are not to blame for the current system," as further noted by Blacklock's. โ€œThese individuals have studied, worked, paid taxes and supported Canadaโ€™s economy and social fabric including during the Covid-19 pandemic,โ€ the petition continues, adding, โ€œThey deserve compassion, stability and a fair opportunity to build a secure future in the country they already call home.โ€ Tamara criticized the petition, noting Canada should not be welcoming people as permanent residents who are attempting to find loopholes in immigration law. "It's not always the fault of the international students per se, but if you're due for deportation, and your visa's expiring, then guess what, you have to go," she said. "We can't expect people to come here and find some sort of loophole to stay and then expect that they will uphold our laws and regulations if they're coming here intent on breaking them from the onset," Tamara continued. "I'm not saying that everyone is guilty of that, but there are certainly people who are trying to capitalize on some of those loopholes, and I think that's just a recipe for disaster," she said. If the goals of the petition were successful, the Canadian population would increase by over three million people despite Mark Carney previously pledging to significantly reduce immigration after a massive spike under Justin Trudeau.

My Statement on Conditions for the Use of Firearms by Police Officers I have seen debates, reactions, and expressions regarding my recent statement on the use of firearms by police officers. My statement was made contextually and consciously with clarity of mind based on the express provisions of the law. No leader, scholar, jurist, journalist, blogger, or opinion shaper has challenged me on the law. At my age, position, and experience, I cannot utter statements that are not supported by the Constitution and the law. Throughout my career, I have never, in my conduct or utterances, found myself on the wrong side of the law. Indeed the Sixth Schedule of the National Police Service Act, in Paragraph B(1), provides the conditions for use of firearms by the Police as follows: 1.Protecting the lives of officers or civilians 2.Self-defense against imminent threats of death or serious injury protection through justified force 4.Preventing the escape of felony suspects from lawful custody I ask all those who are spreading misinformation, disinformation, and fake news to challenge me on the law. Those who are saying I issued an order to the police should show where the order is. A mere restatement of the law as it exists cannot amount to giving an order to the police. The Police are mandated by law to operate within the constitutional framework, the statutes, and the departmental standing orders. In any case, I have no constitutional powers to give such orders; instead, I have a duty to support the police and to formulate policy recommendations to aid the application of law in the enforcement of law and order. Our police officers who are attacked by robbers, rioters, and arsonistsโ€”who have torched police stations, stolen rifles, burnt suspects alive, and burnt property worth millions of shillings, including courts โ€”cannot be left helpless when they have been given the authority by the Constitution and the law to defend themselves, the citizens, and their property. The law is in black and white.
