#WATCH | Delhi | Animal rights activist & BJP leader Maneka Gandhi says, โ€œBack in 1972, when Indira Gandhi was in power, India enacted the Wildlife Protection Act, a pioneering piece of legislation that was highly acclaimed worldwide. There were Jain monks, specifically the Digambara sect, who exerted significant pressure regarding this issue. These monks carry a specific type of broom-like whisk called a Pichhi tucked at their waist as they walk; it is crafted from peacock feathers. They urged that the ban should not apply to these feathers. Indira Gandhi agreed, and consequently, this became the only type of feather legally permitted for sale in India. Now, the thing is, these feathers do not simply drop on their own; a peacock sheds only one feather a monthโ€ฆ Once the door was opened and the ban was lifted, a massive industry emerged. Because the feathers are so beautiful, everyone got involved... People started displaying feathers in their homes instead of flowers. The reality is that these feathers are now obtained almost exclusively by killing the peacocksโ€ฆ Back in 2001, I presented all this evidence to Atal Bihari Vajpayee and suggested we introduce an amendment to ban these feathers. He agreed, and the amendment was drafted and taken to Parliament. However, the Jain community exerted immense pressure from high levels, insisting that this could not happen. I was forced to withdraw the drafted amendment, and the matter was dropped. Now, my point is not that the Digambar Jains killed the birds, but rather that they opened the door; and once that door is opened, who knows what or who might walk through it?โ€

First thing first, they're called peafowls. Only the males are called peacock while the females are called peahens. The name peacock overshadowed the general name for the birds because it is only the male that has that flamboyant tail feathers. The females are beautiful in their own ways but feature subtler colors like gray and brown, not blue. Any peacock you see with the flamboyant fantail is at least 3 years old. When peachicks first hatch and for many months after, the little males and females are impossible to tell apart. They both have the soft, fluffy, and modest brown colour. After three months, the males will start developing colours but they won't have the brilliant tail feathers until they're three. If you need the peacock's feather, you don't need to pluck it forcefully. Just be patient. At the end of every mating season, peacocks undergo molting. This is when they naturally shed their feathers and regrow them longer and fuller ahead of the following mating season. The feathers are used to woo females. Peahens are like those hungry girls that don't have a car but judge a man with Corolla. Even though they don't have the fantails, they will inspect the males properly before picking him as mate. The feathers, the display, the angle and the illusion it creates, these are all judged before the male is found worthy.
