BAIL DENIED: Former agriculture minister Mac-Albert Hengari (59) and his 30-year-old co-accused were denied bail during Hengari’s first appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court this morning. Hengari’s co-accused is a brother to the woman who has accused the disgraced ex-minister of rape, and allegedly flew in from Germany to facilitate a bribe payment of N$222 000 for her to withdraw her case she had laid against Hengari. He was arrested on Saturday while allegedly trying to hand over the money. Hengari and his co-accused, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the alleged victim, are each facing a charge of defeating the ends of justice, linked to alleged violations of the Riotous Assemblies Act. State prosecutor Seredine Jacobs opposed bail, citing fears that Hengari could interfere with pending police investigations. The co-accused, a resident of Germany, was also denied bail on the grounds that he poses a flight risk. Suspect Emmanuel Opoku has reportedly been arraigned before the Jacobu District Court on a charge of threat of death, in connection with a viral video in which he is alleged to have issued violent threats against police and military personnel. The accused entered a plea of guilty and was duly convicted on his own plea by the presiding judge, Her Worship Eugenia Adobea. Police in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, have arrested the groom, Farman, and his maternal uncle over allegations that beef was cooked at a wedding reception (walima). The police reached the resort where the wedding was being held and had around 40 cauldrons of korma, prepared for guests, discarded. They also seized a Scorpio vehicle, which was allegedly used to transport the meat as part of the dowry. According to the police, they received credible information that illegal beef would be served at the feast. A team immediately reached the resort, where the accused were present, and arrested them on the spot. Charges have been filed against the accused under sections related to cow slaughter, transportation of beef, illegal sale or serving of meat in a public place, and hurting religious sentiments. The police have also named the banquet hall operator, Anees, in the case.
