SPEED KILLS Rockies Jake McCarthy lays down a bunt in an untraditional situation. Ninth inning two run lead with one out 3-1 count. Usually a damage count. He sees the 3B back off & pretty much give him a free hit. He looks at it as a double because he is confident in his ability to steal 2B which he does. He then bounces around at 2B & distracts the pitcher enough that he balks. He goes to 3B & scores on a sac fly. Not the kind of disruptive one man band stuff you see in professional baseball very often.

#24 Lander Baseball (31-11, 16-5) impressed with a road sweep of GCSU to take sole possession of 1st in the Peach Belt and continue their win streak to 11 games. Gary Garrett set the school record for single season stolen bases with his 26th. He had 4 on the week and has a stolen base in 5 of his last 6 games. Anson Merrick threw a complete game to complete the sweep, allowing just 2 earned runs with 3 strikeouts. Ethan Wilder went 8-for-18 with 5 RBI on the week, extending his hit streak to 16 games. Will Ray (Wake Forest Baseball) was one of the most dominant relievers on the Cape this summer. The former two-way showcased a high 80s - low 90s sinker from a sidearm slot with plenty of run and a sweeping slider that limited hitters to an average of 68.2 mph EV and a 0.59 xFIP (per Anthony Marotta as of 7/19). It's a plus pitch that was used more than the sinker and acts as his best offering. He also mixed in a splitter with some sink to get miss in and out of the zone. He appeared in 14 games for the Whitecaps on the Cape, limiting hard contact and base-runners with a 1.18 WHIP, 23 K/2 BB in 22 IP. Ray's stuff played well in the lower half of the zone but was susceptible to the long ball at times. Perhaps adding a four-seam FB that could get some chase at the top of the zone could help his overall profile. As of 7/23, Ray was 100th percentile in hard-hit % and 93rd percentile in opponent average exit speed (per Anthony Marotta). Ray made significant progress in his control and as a result, dropped his 4.9 BB/9 in 44 IP last spring to just 0.8 BB/9 in 22 IP this summer in the CCBL. He was able to make some of the top offensive college bats look foolish (Kurland - sinker, Burress - slider, Martinez - splitter; shown below).

I’ve had a front-row seat to one National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum ⚾ candidate my whole life — my dad, @dalemurphh3. People talk about the “character clause” keeping guys out. For him, it’s the opposite — his character is a reason we often say to put him in. I see it on display constantly: camping with his grandkids, hyping up crowds with my daughter in the DR, planning surprise picnics for his granddaughters, and he and my mom pouring their lives into helping my brother with special needs live a full, joyful life. It’s not just the big things you see in public. He does the little things too. But make no mistake. On the field, he was one of the most dominant players of the ’80s. And baseball fans everywhere remember it. I hope we can remember the dominant ones of the 80s this weekend.

Darien Smith (Southeastern Baseball) may be one of the best unsigned arms still on the board following the MLB Draft. He had good command of his 4SFB (up to 15.9 iVB) that averaged 92.7 mph (T95) and mixed in a sinker that could run under the hands of RHH with up to 18.8 in HZ break (per Trackman Baseball). There was good feel with his tight SL (avg 82.7, ~2500 rpm) which was used to attack hitters and induce GB's. His sweeper played more as a chase pitch out of the zone (29% usage combined). The circle CH (avg 83.9) might have been the most effective put-out pitch in his start on 7/30. It had a CSW% of 28.6% at 11.3% usage. It generated 100% whiff and had solid fade down and away against LHH. The NAIA standout won Pitcher of the Year last spring at Southeastern, putting up video game numbers in 2 seasons; 22-2, 182 IP, 2.37 ERA, 257 K, 58 BB.

Can't help but smile at this one. One of those stories I think we are going to look back and laugh at one day. ⬇️ James Voorhies was an uncommitted catcher (and a very good one) just over a year ago. Hadn't thrown a varsity inning on the mound. In October going into his senior year I played catch with him at the local elementary school. We threw on a crabgrass field and I told him after 15 minutes of playing catch that his arm, body type, and feel for the baseball were far too advanced for him to not be on the mound. James agreed to start throwing bullpens and "give it a shot". 3 weeks later I did a workout with some of our clients and James threw a bullpen on the game mound. He was 85-87 and absolutely pounded the zone. Threw 3 of the dirtiest changeups I’ve seen (we had played with a kick-change grip a few weeks prior). I had never seen him throw against hitters. Saw a 15 minute catch play session and his first bullpen in years. I Immediately sent the video to a handful of Division 1 programs that were on his list and gave them the scoop. “He's got zero track record but everything about him looks like a future pro arm”. Responses ranged anywhere from excitement to skepticism, which was 100% to be expected. Fast forward a few months to February... CSUN pulled the trigger before his high school season even started and James went on to post a 1.09 ERA, 83 IP, 60 H, 21 BB, and 83 K in his first year of pitching to help take College Park HS to the NCS championship. So here we are essentially 1 year after Jimmy started pitching full time and he’s up to 94 mph as a true freshman, with a win and a save in his first two collegiate appearances with 7.2 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 13 K. Pretty cool story of a guy going “all in” on something new and different, and a college program taking a chance on a guy that they see future potential in. But the best part of this story and biggest point I want to make is that I firmly believe the reason Jimmy V was the guy that CSUN took a shot on was because of his makeup, work ethic, character, and competitiveness. Jimmy is one of the best “makeup” guys I’ve ever recruited or advised. He is the perfect combination of humble and confident and was the QB/captain of his football team in high school. Jimmy made it easy for CSUN to say “that’s the guy we want to take a chance on.” And yes, it helped that he was 6’4” and a big time multi-sport athlete with a ton of upside. While many around the league don’t expect any linebackers to be drafted tonight, if there is one, it certainly could be #TexasAM’s Edgerrin Cooper. Cooper is the most complete LB in the 2024 draft class. He’s shown to be: 1️⃣an elite athlete 2️⃣a consistent and impactful run defender 3️⃣a capable and efficient blitzer, and 4️⃣able to use his size and bend to disrupt in pass protection As a run defender, he finished with an 87.6 PFF grade, highest among any expected draft linebackers in this year’s draft class. That includes 15 TFLs or no gain plays. As you can see (🎥), his downhill force plus balance and control allows him to consistently win in the run game As a pass rusher, he had 7 sacks on the year, 4 of which came from playing on the line of scrimmage. When lined up on the line of scrimmage, he generated a pressure on over 30% of his pass rush snaps. Elite ‼️ And in coverage, he finished with a top-10 coverage grade int eh country last season (per PFF College) among LBs lined up in the box. He’s able to use his length and bend, along with developed vision and timing to disrupt plays from the box. Couple all of that with a 4.51 forty time and would-be impressive athletic testing numbers if he was 100% for the draft process (why he wasn’t able to officially go every day in practice at This Account Has Moved), and it’s hard to ignore his NFL starting potential. There’s a real chance he goes in late round one, but if he’s there on Day 2, he may not only be one of, if not the, first linebacker drafted, but may be one of the first players taken on Day 2 of the draft. #ShrineBowlWhosNext

UCLA C Cashel Duggar has one of the highest floors in the draft and has the upside to be a really solid MLB backstop. He is one of it not the best defensive catchers in the draft doing everything really well. He averaged a 1.86 pop time in game and held runners to a 62% SB clip against him which falls to 58% at 2B. He also moves very well behind the plate as a blocker and receiver. While the defense is the big highlight, Duggar has shown a very mature approach at the plate with a 17% K% compared to 14% BB% in 2026. He kept the Whiff and Chase rates under 20% as well. He finished the year slashing just .250/.378/.380. However the mature approach on top of the great frame at 6'2 200 pounds and being left handed hitter makes a lot of scouts love the upside. His defense is already near MLB ready and if he can become just a below average MLB hitter he will be a long term backup backstop. If the bat progresses even a little bit he has the upside to be a top 10-15 catcher in baseball.

Everybody says they want it… But Few have the fortitude to do the things it takes to get what they say they want Seneca 2024 & UPJ commit Zyler Freedman - after a long chase- slays the 🐉 dragon 90 mph off the mound tonight Here’s the story 📖 Zyler came to PVS baselining on the mound at 76.2 summer between Frosh and Sophomore year. No great size or mobility gifts… but what he did have- was the heart of a Lion. And that determination and discipline led to some great gains in his first year at PVS. He had a goal of 90 mph on the mound at PBR in Feb of 2023. He came up short in a memorable display of determination : 88 mph @PBRPennsylvania He dusted himself off and put his efforts into pitch design and command. He became one of the WPIAL’s best pitchers in the toughest baseball section. After that- he went to the Youngstown Class B summer league and pitched well there and committed to UPJ. After his commitment - we sat down and devised a plan. A plan most kids don’t have the patience to execute. It was rooted in Alan Jaeger Jaeger Sports principles of Weening off volume and building two weeks for every down week. We are talking 5 months folks. Throw by throw execution for five months. Everybody says they want it… But Few have the fortitude to do the things it takes to get what they say they want Seneca 2024 & UPJ commit Zyler Freedman - after a long chase- slays the 🐉 dragon 90 mph off the mound tonight Here’s the story 📖 Zyler came to PVS baselining on the mound at 76.2 summer between Frosh and Sophomore year. No great size or mobility gifts… but what he did have- was the heart of a Lion. And that determination and discipline led to some great gains in his first year at PVS. He had a goal of 90 mph on the mound at PBR in Feb of 2023. He came up short in a memorable display of determination : 88 mph @PBRPennsylvania He dusted himself off and put his efforts into pitch design and command. He became one of the WPIAL’s best pitchers in the toughest baseball section. After that- he went to the Youngstown Class B summer league and pitched well there and committed to UPJ. After his commitment - we sat down and devised a plan. A plan most kids don’t have the patience to execute. It was rooted in Alan Jaeger Jaeger Sports principles of Weening off volume and building two weeks for every down week. We are talking 5 months folks. Throw by throw execution for five months. One football league is spending money at a scale the rest of the world cannot match. With the transfer window still open, Premier League clubs have already spent more than about 1.9 billion dollars this summer, and they are on track to beat last year's record of about 4 billion dollars. A handful of clubs drive most of it. This summer the British transfer record was broken twice in three weeks. Manchester City paid about 156 million dollars for Elliot Anderson, then Chelsea topped it with about 158 million dollars for Morgan Rogers. Tottenham alone spent more than about 270 million dollars rebuilding their squad. To put it in perspective, at the start of 2026 the combined value of Premier League squads was around two and a half times that of Spain's La Liga. The gap is not about talent alone. It is about who controls the television money, and right now one league is pulling away from everyone else.

With the MLB draft coming up in 21 days, it's time to start prepping some of these guys to transition into pro ball! I fully expect to hear Ariston Veasey's name called EARLY this year. It's easy to see why: ✅ Sits 95 mph ✅ Tops 98 mph ✅ 20" IVB fastball (cut-ride 👀) ✅ Nasty slider ✅ ~60% whiff rate ✅ 32% K rate ✅ .138 BAA ✅ Absolute DOG on the mound The crazy part? Ariston is new to pitching! Not kidding. He had 10 innings in his entire life before I started coaching him last year. He's an elite athlete who is easy to coach because he can actually make adjustments if cued the right way. He dominated hitters this year with only 2 pitches. They're both elite and will play in pro ball. However, the untapped potential here is the best part. I've seen him throw changeups literally one time, and he threw some of the best ones I've ever seen. See for yourself in the first 3 pitches in the bullpen video. The kid's just got it.
