๐Ÿ”ด UN: Sudanโ€™s Conflict and Famine Deepen as Civilians Trapped, Starved, and Exposed to Disease UN spokesperson Farhan Haq warned that conditions in Sudan are deteriorating rapidly after 842 days of war. โ–ช๏ธ Al Fasher, capital of North Darfur, remains under siege with no food deliveries by road in over a year. One year after famine was confirmed in nearby Zamzam camp, starvation is spreading across the city. โ–ช๏ธ Prices for basic staples like sorghum and wheat are 4x higher than elsewhere in Sudan. Families cannot afford food, and aid is nowhere near sufficient. โ–ช๏ธ Fighting near Abu Shouk camp, which houses 25,000 displaced people, has intensified. In North Kordofan, the town of Umm Sumaymah has changed hands repeatedly in recent weeks. โ–ช๏ธ Cholera is spreading across Darfur, with 1,200+ cases in Tawila, including 300 children. South Darfur has reported over 1,100 suspected cases and 64 deaths, with a fatality rate over 6%. โ–ช๏ธ The lives of 640,000 children under five are at heightened risk from hunger, disease, and violence, according to UNICEF. โ–ช๏ธ In Khartoum State, landmines in Mogran, Omdurman, and Bahri are killing civilians and cutting off access to health care and aid. โ–ช๏ธ Flooding in Damazin (Blue Nile State) displaced over 100 people and destroyed 200 tents in Al Karama camp. The UN calls for immediate, sustained humanitarian access and renewed international support.

FUNERAL SERVICE FOR DAVID SEJOBE UNDERWAY IN LIMPOPO AS NATION MOURNS BELOVED SECURITY GUARD The funeral service for David Sejobe, the celebrated MultiChoice security officer killed in a suspected hitโ€‘andโ€‘run collision last week, is taking place today in Ha Mashambaโ€‘Mukondeni Village, drawing mourners from across South Africa. Sejobe, 49, was widely known for his radiant smile, warm greetings and daily kindness to motorists and pedestrians outside the MultiChoice headquarters in Randburg. He was struck by a vehicle while cycling to work along the Golden Highway, in what police are investigating as a hitโ€‘andโ€‘run incident. Tributes poured in nationwide following his death, with friends, colleagues and members of the public sharing memories of a man whose positivity and resilience made him a cherished figure beyond his job description. Thousands gathered outside the MultiChoice offices earlier this week to honour his life and legacy. A crowdfunding campaign launched to support Sejobeโ€™s family has exceeded its original target, raising more than R500 000 to help cover funeral expenses and provide for his loved ones. Political groups, including the Economic Freedom Fighters, have used the moment to call for justice and broader reforms in the private security sector, urging anyone with information about the collision to assist police. Sejobeโ€™s daily cycling commute from Orange Farm to Randburg became emblematic of his dedication to his work and community. Todayโ€™s funeral marks a final farewell from a community united in grief and gratitude for a life that touched many.

The FDA just announced thereโ€™s another cyclospora outbreak. Seventy-two people have been linked to the new outbreak, according to an update posted on the agencyโ€™s website Wednesday. While the agency has launched traceback investigations, it has not provided any information on the source of the parasite or the outbreak location. Messaging around these outbreaks has been confusing and health experts say thatโ€™s in part because of the difficulty in tracking the parasite, which also canโ€™t be reproduced in a lab. The previous major outbreak, focused in Michigan and four surrounding states, has been linked to shredded iceberg lettuce sold by Taylor Farms and grown in central Mexico, though thatโ€™s not been confirmed through lab testing. On Friday, the Washington Post reported that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has linked this outbreak to four additional states โ€” Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania โ€” bringing the total to nine. Meanwhile, individual cases of cyclosporiasis have now been reported in 41 states. While we wait for more information, these are still good food safety tips to follow: Wash hands with soap and water before handling food. Alcohol-based sanitizers donโ€™t kill cyclospora, but soap and water is highly effective. Make sure to wash your produce well and cook food to at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit. Lastly, stay away from recalled produce and wash surfaces that it may have touched.

I deplore todayโ€™s strikes on the PRCS-run Al-Amal hospital in the southern #Gaza city of Khan Younis, which severely damaged the Palestine Red Crescent Society training centre located within the hospital complex. My World Health Organization (WHO) and UN Humanitarian colleagues today undertook a mission to the facilities, where they witnessed extensive damage and displacement of civilians The attacks, according to the PRCS, killed at least five civilians, including a 5-day old infant. 14,000 people were sheltering at the hospital in the besieged southern #Gaza city of Khan Younis. Many of them have now left, and those remaining are extremely fearful for their safety and planning to leave a place they had turned to for refuge and protection. Hospitals, ambulances, health workers, and people seeking care must be protected, at all times, under international humanitarian law. Todayโ€™s bombardments are unconscionable. Gazaโ€™s health system is already on its knees, with health and aid workers continuously stymied in their efforts to save lives due to the hostilities. I join international calls for an immediate ceasefire, including urgent action to ensure the accelerated and unimpeded flow of food, medical supplies, water and other essential items to millions of civilians forced to live in unspeakable conditions of hunger, disease spread, and lack of hygiene and sanitation. Gazans are still receiving only a fraction of the supplies they had access to before the war, just as only a fraction of Gazans in need of medical evacuation are being evacuated. This is unacceptable in light of the dire humanitarian catastrophe which has unfolded over three months. Indeed, WHOโ€™s movements, particularly in northern Gaza and increasingly in the south, have been severely impeded by the ongoing violence inside Gaza. Our operations are further impeded when essential local partners, like the PRCS, are themselves needlessly impacted by the strikes. This on top of widespread deaths, suffering and decimation of homes, roads and other infrastructure across this tiny coastal strip of land. If the conditions for a cease-fire in hostilities have not been met by now, I do not know what it will take. WHO reiterates that health must never be a target during conflicts, and all effort must be taken to protect health facilities, health workers, and patients.
