At a farewell lunch in Delhi when I was about to leave for London on my posting as India’s Deputy High Commissioner to the UK in 1999, PM Sh Narendra Modi Ji who was then a private citizen and a Pracharak had promised to visit me in London. That visit couldn’t materialise, but I had the privilege of hosting him during my posting in India at UN, Geneva when he visited Geneva in August 2003 as the Chief Minister of Gujarat to bring back the urn containing the ashes of the freedom fighter and a proud son of India Sh Shyamji Krishna Varma Ji to the motherland. Such was the farsight and focus of PM Modi Ji from the time he was the CM that he not only knew about the ashes but was also determined to fulfil the wish of the great freedom fighter that his and his wife’s and his ashes should be taken to India when it becomes independent. PM Modi Ji is very strong when it comes to honouring the past, and taking pride in our cultural & civilisational heritage. So there I shared an insight made by my father regarding 2014 election and Narendra Modi ji. That was for the first time in the history of Lok Sabha elections that a new face was declared as the prime ministerial candidate. Baba later told me about that moment and how he candidly assured Narendra Modi: “We belong to two different ideologies, but the people have given you a mandate. I will not interfere with governance—that is your job. #MYMODISTORY PM Narendra Modi ji has always inspired people to look beyond themselves and work for a larger cause. His conversations often plant seeds of ideas that grow into something impactful and lasting. When I won my first Grammy Award in 2015, one year after he became the Prime Minister, I wished to meet him. Soon after, I received a call from his office and my wish came true. I expected the meeting to last only a few minutes with some photographs. To my surprise, it became an hour-long discussion. During our conversation, we discovered our shared passion for protecting the environment and conserving every species. PM Modi ji spoke about his upcoming visit to COP21, the Paris Climate Change Conference. He shared his thoughts about the issues he would raise there, including the International Solar Alliance. As we exchanged ideas, we thought of creating an album that would present India’s perspective on climate change. The vision was to involve musicians from across the world and make it diverse and inclusive. This inspired me to create Shanti Samsara, an album featuring 500 musicians from 40 countries. Narendra Modi ji encouraged the project and gave it a global stage. He launched the album at COP21 in Paris by gifting it to the then President of France François Hollande and the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. For me, it was more than music. During a visit to Indore, my home city, PM Narendra Modi ji took time to meet my family. We were nervous; after all, we were about to meet the Prime Minister of India, a global leader. But the moment we stepped into the room, the nervousness dissolved. It felt less like meeting more like meeting someone we had known all our whole lives. That is Modi ji’s nature. Whoever he meets, he makes them feel seen, valued, and special. He joked with me about my constant travels, “Your legs never stay at home”, and in that light-heartedness, the distance between Prime Minister and us vanished. In that meeting, we spoke of ground-level work, of responsibility, of the importance of inspiring others to build. His energy was ceaseless, so much so that when we left, it lingered with us, impossible to describe, but impossible to forget. I count myself fortunate, as does my family, to have met him and to have received not just his blessings, but his infectious energy, an energy that continues to inspire me to this day.
