Three years ago, Aweys Mohamed of Dalsan TV conducted an interview with Somalia’s former Foreign Minister. the minister struggled... to respond the question, visibly shaken and stumbling over his words, as the weight of the questions became too heavy for a clear answer. For instance, how can someone holding American citizenship be entrusted to mediate disputes between Somalia and the United States, while simultaneously bound by obligations to the very country that granted him citizenship? Can such an individual truly be relied upon to defend Somalia’s national interest when his loyalty may be compromised by duties to another state? President Hassan Sheikh’s declaration strikes at the very heart of this dilemma.
