This is one of the unknown miracles of the Tilma of Guadalupe: The stars on her mantle aren't decoration, they are a music. The stars on the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe perfectly align with the constellations over Mexico on December 12, 1531. The stars are arranged in emmission (as if viewed from outside the solar system, looking toward Earth) rather than reflection (as seen from Earth's surface looking up). But there is a hidden code. “The average person lives a life of luxury that previous generations could never imagine, but because of that we dont actually taste this deeper joy that I think God intends for us.” Most people today live with a level of comfort that would have looked unbelievable to almost anyone in history. Food is always available, entertainment never stops, boredom can be eliminated instantly, and almost every inconvenience can be solved with a screen and a few clicks. That’s why so many people today have everything they thought they wanted and still feel empty afterward. The strange paradox of modern life is that we have removed many of the hardships that once burdened humanity, but in the process we also removed many of the conditions that produced gratitude, resilience, depth, and dependence on God. A civilization drowning in comfort often becomes spiritually numb without even realizing it. Which is probably why some of the holiest people in history voluntarily embraced hardship even when they did not have to. They understood something we are slowly forgetting: Comfort and happiness are not the same thing.

This young woman says she doesn’t want to go to heaven for a few reasons. People want to go to heaven because we love Jesus. The issue here is not wanting to go to heaven, it’s not seeing Jesus as enough. If you’re not relieved by the idea of no longer having to bear the burden of sin, then I’m afraid you haven’t understood who you are as a sinner and also the beauty of the gospel and the hope we have in eternity. Heaven will be forever communion with Jesus, the one who died for us and saved us. It’s not heaven you’re not wanting, it’s Christ.
