Bronn’s trial by combat was one of the smartest fights in Game of Thrones. One of my favorite exchanges: “Is it over?” “No… he is.” That line perfectly sums up Bronn’s philosophy. Honor doesn’t matter when your life is on the line. Survival does. While Ser Vardis fought by the book, weighed down with armor, shield, and a code of honor, Bronn fought to win. He stayed light on his feet, wore his opponent down, and used every advantage available. That’s not dishonorable, that’s smart. Bronn even gave Ser Vardis chances to surrender. Lysa could’ve stopped the fight at any moment, but she wanted a verdict. She got one. And Tyrion’s reaction was priceless. Standing there with his hands already stretched out, waiting to be uncuffed like, “Well… let’s get on with it.” 😂 That victory didn’t just save Tyrion’s life it introduced us to one of the greatest sellswords in Westeros. 20 years in football teaches you a lot about the unwritten rules of the game... And one of them is how you treat the people who came before you 👀 I came across this footage of players and staff leaving through the tunnel after Arsenal's win over Chelsea. Standing there were Freddie Ljungberg and Emmanuel Petit - two Arsenal legends who won the lot and helped shape one of the club's greatest eras 👏 And almost nobody acknowledges them. Not after a win, not on their own patch, nothing. But Declan Rice was the one exception, and honestly, it was great to see. The way he took a moment to acknowledge two men who helped build that club says a lot about his character!!! Football has a short memory, and I get that. But the culture lives in the small moments just as much as the big ones. It costs absolutely nothing - a nod, a handshake, two seconds of your time. Try to name one leader alive today who would do this. In 325 BC, in the middle of a desert that was killing his army, Alexander the Great was handed the only water his men had found for miles. He had brought them there himself. Coming home from India there were safer roads, but he chose the Gedrosian Desert, in what is now southern Iran and Pakistan. The Greek historian Arrian is clear that he knew what he was doing. He went that way because almost nobody had ever brought an army through it alive: legend said the queen Semiramis came out the other side with twenty men, and Cyrus the Great with seven. Alexander wanted to beat them both. The crossing took sixty days. Arrian writes that the suffering on that march was out of all proportion to anything his troops had endured in Asia. They moved at night, and men fell asleep where they collapsed. The sick were left at the roadside, because there was nobody to carry them and no time to stop. Somewhere in the middle of it, a few soldiers went looking for water and found a tiny trickle in a gully. Try to name one leader alive today who would do this. In 325 BC, in the middle of a desert that was killing his army, Alexander the Great was handed the only water his men had found for miles. He had brought them there himself. Coming home from India there were safer roads, but he chose the Gedrosian Desert, in what is now southern Iran and Pakistan. The Greek historian Arrian is clear that he knew what he was doing. He went that way because almost nobody had ever brought an army through it alive: legend said the queen Semiramis came out the other side with twenty men, and Cyrus the Great with seven. Alexander wanted to beat them both. The crossing took sixty days. Arrian writes that the suffering on that march was out of all proportion to anything his troops had endured in Asia. They moved at night, and men fell asleep where they collapsed. The sick were left at the roadside, because there was nobody to carry them and no time to stop. Somewhere in the middle of it, a few soldiers went looking for water and found a tiny trickle in a gully. They scraped up what they could, tipped it into a helmet, and carried it back to their king... Every man watching him was dying of thirst. So was he. "Alexander, with a word of thanks for the gift, took the helmet and, in full view of his troops, poured the water on the ground." There was not enough for all of them, so he would not take what he could not give. And Arrian records what that did to an army of men who could barely stand: "So extraordinary was the effect of this action that the water wasted by Alexander was as good as a drink for every man in the army." They got up, and they marched. We now live in an age of leaders who start wars their sons will never fight, who ask for sacrifices they would never dream of making themselves, who are always the first to be spared and the last to pay the price. No drugs were ever recovered, and prosecutors later said neither man had committed a crime. Soldiers then beat both men and tortured them with electric shocks. Ledesma died after being shocked while lying in a puddle of water. Moreira was hospitalized but survived to become a key witness against the seven soldiers charged in the case. He has now been murdered. In recent months, Ecuador has deployed 75,000 soldiers, placed more than 70% of the country under military-enforced curfews, and carried out bombings as part of its U.S.-backed campaign purportedly targeting organized crime. Ecuador’s Attorney General’s Office has recorded 244 complaints of excessive force in recent years and 23 reported extrajudicial killings in the last six months. Freedom isn’t free. Years ago, I was watching Saving Private Ryan in a theater when, during the opening D-Day battle scene, an elderly man sitting in front of me suddenly shouted to his friend: “This is just like when we were there.” After the movie was over, I asked them if they had indeed fought in D day and they had. In fact, one had lost his younger brother that day in that gruesome battle. In an instant, history became personal. Their sacrifice filled my heart with gratitude. In an even greater way, when we fix our eyes on the cross of Christ, we are reminded of the greatest battle ever fought. At Calvary, Jesus faced sin, death, and hell itself. not for His sake, but for ours. The freedom we enjoy as Americans was purchased by the sacrifice of brave men and women. This for all Americans is a reminder to be thankful of our American citizenship. On a grander scale, the freedom we enjoy as Christians was purchased by the sacrifice of the Son of God. This for all Christians is a reminder to be thankful for our eternal citizenship. D-Day changed the course of history. Calvary changed eternity. May we never take either for granted.
