This first year student of Architecture (without hands) shared his experience at the World Disabilities Day conference at Makerere yesterday. The determination, the zeal, the resilience! How much do we do to enable them realise such dreams? Many of them of them simply have to struggle to fit in, many eventually drop out due to stigma and inability to navigate environments that exclude them.

Have you ever had a moment that transports you back in time to an unforgettable moment in your life? This is the Temple Church in London which was concreted in 1165. It is the shared church of the Inner and Middle Temple inns of court, located between them. The latter is where my eldest daughter was called to the bar. It serves as a spiritual center for the lawyers associated with the Inns, She was the first in our family to attend university and it was one of the proudest moments in my life, to see her in her robe and wig. COACHES: Here is a GREAT teaching clip of something I see in youth hockey all the time. A player will skate the puck towards one of their teammates and will then pass it to them. It's one of my biggest pet peeves in the game. When you skate the puck towards your teammate, you're effectively bringing defenders towards them too so when you give them the puck you've put them in a difficult spot because now with more defenders near they have less time and space to make a play. This clip is a great example. The CHI defenseman skates the puck toward his partner and then tries to give him a pass. They turn the puck over with two CAR forecheckers now right there and the puck ends up in the back of the net. In youth hockey you see defenseman do this a lot and even more so they'll skate it towards their winger and then give them the puck either on the breakout or in the neutral zone. A better solution would be to move it right away or suck defenders towards you (and away from) your teammate so when you pass to them they'll have more time and space. Phenomenal teaching clip on time and space!!

I'm absolutely anguished at the inhumane treatment that has been meted out to the Indians who have been deported from the United States of America and brought to Amritsar. They are not criminals; they may have illegally entered the US in search of a better life. The first question that needs to be determined, for which there are no answers so far, is whether the due process of law, as available in the US, has been followed for their deportation. If at all they are deported, why do you need to handcuff them, shackle them for hours, and make them eat food with their hands in handcuffs? This is absolutely inhumane and medieval. We are not living in barbaric times; every person has the right to be treated with human dignity. Yes, you don't want them in your country. Ostensibly, they entered illegally. You are sending them back; GoI is taking them back, but at least send them back with dignity and respect. Many of those who do return with horrible stories: they are turned into commodities, bought and sold, used and abused at the leisure of their owner. Some of them get permanent mental instabilities. The Government of Uganda - which has the mandate to protect all Ugandans in and outside the country - can do way more than releasing a list of licensed companies, which is all it does actually now. Protesters at Saint Annes police station last night. I have seen in the Echo today that politicians have come out condemning the next protest organised by the same person on County Road next week. Country Road is one of many areas in Liverpool that has undergone massive demographic and cultural change in a short space of time. Many of the locals are upset that this has been done to their home without consulting with any of them. It’s not that they were ignored. They were never part of the decision-making process to begin with. So they are taking to the streets to make themselves heard. And now they are being silenced by the very people that did this to them.

It’s interesting to see how so many media outlets, politicians, and representatives of international NGOs lie so blatantly about El Salvador. Anyone who has visited our country knows that tattoos are not only allowed, but very common. Many Salvadorans have them, even in highly visible areas: full sleeves, face, neck, hands, etc. It’s simply not true that people are required to cover them up. It’s also false that tattoo artists have been arrested. There are hundreds of tattoo shops, and many are now doing better than ever, since they can stay open late without being extorted by gangs. Tattoos aren’t even socially frowned upon. On the contrary, many people see them as body art and a form of personal expression. What is prohibited are gang symbols, but not just in tattoos. They are banned in any form: on walls, in the media, even on graves. This shouldn’t surprise anyone. In Europe, Nazi symbols are banned, and no one is outraged by it. In fact, we only restricted them in the media for one year (during the height of the war on gangs) and they are allowed again now. Yet we were scolded by the “international community” for that temporary measure, while Nazi symbols have been prohibited in Europe for 80 years. So which is it? What is acceptable for them is not acceptable for us? The European argument is that banning those symbols is necessary to prevent a return to a past they do not want to relive. Well, that is our argument too.
