The Somali Republic was formed in 1960 by a voluntary union between two sovereign states: the State of Somaliland and the Trust Territory of Somalia. That union abolished both states. No clan or group can unilaterally revive a defunct colonial border and call it a country.

The United Kingdom does not recognize the so-called independence of the clan-state of Somaliland. Somaliland’s claim to sovereignty is largely based on the argument that it is different from the rest of Somalia because it was formerly a British colony. In reality, Somaliland represents one of the United Kingdom’s failed and illegitimate colonial projects. It is therefore encouraging to see the UK reaffirm its position in support of the unity of the Somali people
