I met the 91 year old ailing father of Capt Sumeet Sabharwal, pilot of the Air India 171 plane that crashed seconds after it left Ahmedabad for London. In the twilight of his life , the father has turned warrior for the reputation of his son . “Hurt Like Hell” he told me through tears, his frail frame trembling, as he spoke of the whispers around his son having deliberately crashed the plane as part of some crazed suicide mission. Pushkar Raj Sabharwal is now in the Supreme Court fighting for a new independent judicial probe into the crash. And the findings of a whistleblower report on the 787 plane’s “electrical failures” submitted to the U.S. Senate vindicates him and his fight. Could not feign any emotional distance in this conversation. Especially when he placed his hand on my head and said “Jeete Raho” the floodgates burst open and I could not hold back my tears. I don’t know Sumeet or his father. This is his first and only interview and I can only thank him for trusting me with his pain.
