Under the visionary leadership and guidance of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, we are working with full commitment to build a strong and future-ready coal gasification ecosystem in the country. In this direction, the Government had earlier launched the first phase of the Coal Gasification Incentive Scheme with an allocation of ₹8,500 crore. Under this phase, 8 projects have already been sanctioned, with work on nearly 4 projects already underway on the ground. The remaining projects are also progressing rapidly. Further strengthening this mission, the Union Cabinet has now approved the second phase of the Coal Gasification Incentive Scheme with an outlay of ₹37,500 crore. In a short span of time, the coal ministry worked extensively to prepare the guidelines and bring the complete details of this incentive scheme before stakeholders. The speed and efficiency with which this initiative has moved from Cabinet approval to implementation reflects the decisive, reform-driven, and action-oriented governance of the Narendra Modi government.

On Dec 1 2023, the Prime Minister had announced grandly in Dubai that India would be hosting the annual UN Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP) in India in late 2028. Clearly the intention was to milk the global gathering for whatever it is worth in the months before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections - like Mr. Modi did by having the G20 Summit in New Delhi a few months before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Unexpectedly last night, it was announced that India will not be hosting the high-profile 2028 Conference. No reasons have been given for this sudden decision. But it does reflect on the Modi Govt’s true commitment to the 2015 Paris Agreement both in letter and spirit. It also calls into question the Modi Govt’s true commitment to take on more ambitious carbon mitigation goals in the short and medium term. By 2028, the seventh assesment report of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) may get published and this could put greater pressure on India as the Chair of the 2028 Conference to forge a new consensus that would undoubtedly involve a scaling up of ambitions not just for a distant future. Incidentally, do we recall what the PM had told a group of children some years ago on his view of climate change? He had remarked that ‘people have changed, climate has not.’ Bizarre!

So there I shared an insight made by my father regarding 2014 election and Narendra Modi ji. That was for the first time in the history of Lok Sabha elections that a new face was declared as the prime ministerial candidate. Otherwise if you see even within Congress also, first there is the election, there is always an assumption and specially if the election is being led by a Prime Minister of the previous government, there is always an assumption that that person is going to be the next Prime Minister. But here in this case, it was a new face and he was projected as the Prime Minister. And so as if it was people who chose not just BJP, not just Narendra Modi Ji's party but Narendra Modi as a Prime Minister to lead India. So that was a very unique factor. This insight was made by my father. And also this is unprecedented that the first term MP, Narendra Modi Ji has been in politics and made his mark as Gujarat Chief Minister and created that aura around him. But 2014 was his first Lok Sabha election. So this is perhaps unprecedented in the history of India that a first term MP is entering the parliament house as the prime minister.
