Here’s the story of how the Community defeated the latest invasion of Monavale Wetland (one of Harare’s primary water sources) on Thursday this week (30 July 2026) using the community’s secret weapon: Gogo Power - a group of elderly women who have an uncanny fearlessness to stand down bulldozers. Their courage inspires others and this week I had an opportunity to walk in their footsteps and stand down a bulldozer charging at me. For decades, the Community living around Monavale Wetland has defended it from invaders. The Community quickly responded with reinforcements — including some serious Gogo Power — and the illegal bulldozing on the wetland was stopped. The City of Harare and the Environmental Management Agency showed up and fined those involved in the illegal bulldozing of the wetland and the community chased them away! This is an inspiring story about how when communities stand together and fight for their future, they can defeat those who put profit over people. This is just one battle in a long battle to save our wetlands, which means saving our water sources. Join the fight by speaking up, spreading the word, and standing together with your community for a better future. #PeoplePower #WetlandsMatter

How does the design of our neighborhoods affect how we live? In homogenous housing communities where every home is within a narrow size and price point, it means every time vou have a substantial life change you have to pick up and move OUT of your neighborhood and community, and into a new one. What does that do to our sense of belonging, community and rootedness? And what about our kids? New podcast with Ashley Terry Ashley Terry, VP of Development at Wheeler District, a TND near downtown Oklahoma City. Will be out soon! #buildingculture

Every year, I am reminded of something powerful: community is always stronger than crisis. At World Central Kitchen, I have seen again and again that in the worst moments…the best of humanity shows up. That’s the meaning of community: the very people impacted by disaster are the ones who support each other. In 2025, we moved with urgency and worked directly with impacted communities to help them recover after disasters – one meal at a time. #ChefsForTheWorld

To our Jewish community, I wish you a sweet, healthy, and meaningful New Year. New York City is blessed to be the home of the largest Jewish community in the world outside of Israel, and it is one of the great honors of my life to represent you as Mayor. As long as I serve, I will work every day to ensure your safety, to honor your traditions, and to protect the spirit of community that makes this city strong. Shana Tova. שנה טובה ומתוקה
