Brakel has coached his entire 28 years at North Crowley, where he's compiled an 828-163 all-time record. He's coached at the McDonald's All-American Game and USA Basketball Global Games. Brakel is one of the UIL's top 100 Basketball coaches of all time and is our Parker University Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.

Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On May 7, 1969, Denise Long of Whitten, Iowa, became the first woman drafted into the NBA when the San Francisco Warriors selected the basketball standout in the 13th round of the draft. Long caught the attention of basketball fans everywhere when she averaged an astounding 69.6 per game as a senior at Union-Whitten High School in 1969. Growing up in the small Hardin County town of Whitten (population 200), Long developed a love for basketball at an early age. Just one of 34 students in her graduating class at Union-Whitten, the nearly 6-foot-tall Long excelled on the hardwood, scoring at least 100 points on three occasions during high school. Known for her outside shooting prowess, Long netted 6,250 points in her career despite the three-point line still being a thing of the future. He found Bird working on a garbage truck and challenged him, “Want to hang off a garbage truck forever?” Days later, Bird arrived at an ISU scrimmage in jeans, a T-shirt, and work boots. Hodges offered him sneakers and shorts, but Bird said, “No, I play better in this,” then scored 40 points. On the #InternationalWomensDay, what an honor it is for me to be listed among the other notable experts in their fields working towards women’s rights and gender mainstreaming of the SDG2030. I thank the New York City Bar Association New York City Bar for this important recognition. At a time where conflict related deaths are on its record high, where we see a significant set back of decades of progress in democracies, SDG 5: gender equality far far away from its target line, I still think that today is a great chance to disseminate the best practices of women human rights defender, activists, civil society pioneers and peace makers. We will all continue combat state-led atrocity crimes, lead intergovernmental actions for the release of political prisoners and work towards ending gender-apartheid regimes. I will end with this UN Women’s motto for this year: invest in women, accelerate the progress of peace and security. #InvestingInWomen #March2024

Illinois is musing federal funds and providing illegal migrants free healthcare through a program called ‘Healthy Illinois campaign’ “If you're an Illinoisan who lost health coverage in the last year or two, I want you to know that Governor Pritzker worked double time to ensure that immigrants, regardless of immigration status, had access to quality healthcare to the tune of $629 million of funding through the Healthy Illinois campaign. Here's their notice they put up on their site in 2024. The Illinois General Assembly passed the fiscal year 2025 state budget, includes a record amount of funding for the health benefits for immigrant adults and health benefits for immigrant senior programs.” “Total funding for both programs is estimated at $629 million, which includes $440 million from the General Revenue Fund and $189 million from federal reimbursements and other sources. This is a nearly 15% increase in funding from fiscal year 2024, when the programs were funded at $550 million” “This is shameful. This is shameful because I know for a fact that there are Illinoisans who are struggling to pay for their own healthcare out of their own pockets. Healthcare takes such a massive chunk out of most people's paycheck and for the people who don't even have access to it at their jobs, they're struggling to figure out how they can even go to a doctor appointment, how they can go and get prescriptions, how they can get their eyeglasses when they get broken. How they can access dental care. Most people have probably not been to the dentist in years, yet these people, regardless of immigration status” get full healthcare for free
