🛒 Walgreens is piloting body-worn cameras for some of its workers in New York City. The pharmacy chain has dozens of stores in the five boroughs, and it’s unclear which locations will have employees testing out the cameras. Outside a Walgreens in Downtown Brooklyn on Wednesday, New Yorkers had mixed reactions, though many were supportive of the move. “I could see the rationale,” one man said. “As a customer, it doesn’t really bother me if it enhances security.” Another man was worried about bias, saying, “I don’t like to be monitored. I don’t like to be able to walk in the store and they going to watch me every time I go in, thinking I’m going to steal.” “Because we live in a crazy world, I have no problem,” a woman said. Walgreens said it’s not using the cameras to prevent theft but rather to deescalate conflict and keep employees safe. “Walgreens is piloting the voluntary use of body-worn cameras in select stores to help promote the safety of both customers and team members,” said a spokesperson. “Body cameras can help de-escalate conflicts, ultimately contributing to a safer environment for everyone. We understand the importance of protecting customer privacy and have safeguards in place to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations,” the spokesperson said. The pilot comes as the City Council considers bills that would severely limit biometric technology that is already in use at large retailers like Macy’s and Wegmans. 🎤 Marla Diamond reports 📸 Marla Diamond, Richard Pohle - WPA Pool/Getty Images, Spencer Platt/Getty Images 🔊 Tune into 1010 WINS at 92.3 FM for more local news #nyc #newyorkcity #nycnews #brooklyn #downtownbrooklyn #walgreens #bodycam #security #nyccrime

🚨 The NYPD commissioner disbanded the narcotics team involved in last week’s beating of a man who detectives had mistaken for a suspect in Brooklyn. At least eight officers have been reassigned after the eight-minute video of the beating and arrest went viral and sparked outrage. Three members were placed on modified assignments, including the officers involved in the arrest. The Rev. Kevin McCall met with Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Monday for a sit-down. He said he left with assurances from Tisch about oversights of the department's narcotics apprehension teams. He said the commissioner told him that “she saw that the units have gone rogue.” Among the items discussed, McCall said, were “making sure that they have body-worn cameras, making sure that they have radios, and making sure they're not using WhatsApp to communicate with each other.” The meeting stemmed from graphic video showing detectives beating a man, Timothy Brown, at the Brooklyn Wine Depot in Boerum Hill last Tuesday. It turned out it was a case of mistaken identity — he was not the suspect they were after. The charges were dropped. McCall said Mayor Zohran Mamdani also needs to do more. “All he’s doing is smiling and not getting results,” he said. Hawk Newsome, co-founder of Black Lives Matter of Greater New York, said there needs to be accountability and that the video is “symptomatic of the NYPD’s narcotics unit.” Gwen Carr, whose activism was sparked by the death of her son Eric Garner at the hands of police in 2014, said she was having déjà vu. “We as New York citizens do not have to take this abuse,” she said. 🎤 Juliet Papa reports 📸 Courtesy of Abelee Moran, Juliet Papa 🔊 Tune into 1010 WINS at 92.3 FM for more local news #nyc #nycnews #brooklyn #boerumhill #nypd #nyccrime #police
