If you don't like Berhalter, the #USMNT could've had a top level manager. Bielsa was available. Tata was available. A whole host of top managers, whether out of contract or not, could've been courted and hired. But the supporter base let the media (which in effect, is controlled by MLS) manipulate and convince them all these guys weren't affordable or wouldn't be interested in the position. The reason for not getting what's considered a top manager has absolutely nothing to do with money, or that the best wouldn't want the job. It has everything to do with control. With having a "yes man" on the pulpit. The following is an excerpt from episode #329 of the 3four3 podcast.

Without an open pro pyramid, the pay-to-play business model is practically forced upon all [youth] clubs, as there's no alternative revenue mode or potential ROI without a first team competing in the pyramid. Pay-to-play, and youth soccer in general, is relentlessly used as a scapegoat in American soccer in order to distract from the fact that the closed ecosystem is precisely the cause for those issues downstream. Of note, Infantino mentions that the Italian club in his example was in the 6th division. In other words, the club had a first team! When you have a first team, there's an impetus to reduce - if not eliminate - pay-to-play. Youth clubs in the States have no incentive to have a 1st team of their own. Because, again, if the pyramid is closed, there's no economic opportunity there.
