The Met Police have arrested a 52 year old man in connection with a sledgehammer attack on a Muslim family in East London. A Met Police spokesperson said: “On Monday, 8 June at around 09:12hrs, police were called to reports of an aggravated burglary on Galbraith Street, Isle of Dogs. “Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service. A 52-year-old man was detained in connection with the incident.” The suspect was sectioned under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital by paramedics following the incident. Although the Met believes this incident was mental health related, they say they are committed to tackling all forms of hate crime, including Islamophobia.

Paint was thrown across the exterior walls, doors, and windows of the mosque. The masjid is now working with police to find the vandals and establish the motive behind the attack. Mosques all across the UK are increasingly being targeted by similar acts of vandalism amid rising Islamophobia. In a statement, Darul Arqam Mosque said: “This is a deeply concerning incident, particularly as it involves a place of worship that serves the whole community.
