I support President William Samoei Ruto, PhD's call for the death penalty for drug traffickers and peddlers. The narcotics trade continues to be a grave threat to society especially here at the Coast. That said, we must also wake up to the threat that other substances such as Muguka pose to our youth. I urge our legislators to consider legislative amendments to formally eliminate Muguka from the schedule of cash crops and classify it as a harmful drug. We need decisive national action to protect our families and future generations.

Following a constructive engagement with the Cabinet Secretary for Interior, KIPCHUMBA MURKOMEN, E.G.H, alongside my brother Waziri Hassan Ali Joho, EGH. and leaders from the Coast Parliamentary Group, we are clear on one message: the people of the Coast will be counted. For far too long, our region has been pushed to the sidelines of national decision-making, with our significance talked down on the basis of voting numbers. That era is coming to an end. As leaders of the Coast, we have made a deliberate decision to change this reality, and we appreciate the Ministry of Interior for responding positively to our call. Our people will get their national IDs. Birth registration and documentation will be prioritized. Our citizens will be recognized. When our people are documented, our numbers will matter. And when our numbers matter, the Coast will take its rightful place in shaping the future of this nation.

Earlier today, a bus traveling from Ukunda to Nairobi lost control and tipped over while disembarking from the Likoni Ferry, resulting in 9 injuries. I have personally visited the victims at the Coast General Teaching and Referral hospital to offer support and ensure they are receiving the best care possible. The County Government of Mombasa is deeply concerned about the safety of all ferry users. As a measure to prevent future accidents, we will be proposing to the National Government a cessation of vehicular traffic on the ferry. This step aims to enhance safety for both pedestrians and motorists using the ferry. I urge all residents and travelers to remain cautious during this period, as emergency teams wind up their operations at the scene. We will keep you informed of further developments. Our prayers are with those injured, and we wish them a speedy recovery.

We are taking back our city. Mombasa will not be held hostage by fear, violence, or intimidation. That’s why I have submitted a proposal to the Cabinet to amend the Mombasa County Public Nuisance Act and strictly regulate the public possession and sale of machetes (pangas). Once ratified, we will forward it to the County Assembly for their action. No more excuses. No more loopholes. We are adopting a zero-tolerance approach to panga-related violence. Vendors will be held accountable. Offenders will face stiff financial penalties. This is about protecting our people, reclaiming our neighborhoods, and restoring peace to every corner of Mombasa. Our message is clear: We will not allow criminals to define our city.
