Humbled to share that we successfully test fired 3 semi-cryogenic rocket engines simultaneously, as a cluster. All the 3 engines are 3d printed as single pieces of hardware - designed and manufactured in-house at AgniKul Cosmos Rocket Factory - 1. As with all our propulsion systems, these 3 engines are also powered by electric motor driven pumps. This test involved calibrating 6 pumps, 6 motors and tuning 6 speed control algorithms to work together in perfect sync to achieve uniform startup, steady state and shutdown performance across the entire system. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such a test has been performed in India with semi cryogenic engines. Humbled to share that we successfully test fired 4 semi-cryogenic rocket engines simultaneously, as a cluster. All the 4 engines are 3d printed as single pieces of hardware - designed and manufactured in-house at AgniKul Cosmos Rocket Factory - 1. Humbled to announce the successful firing of India’s first electric motor-driven semi-cryogenic engine (video below). This video shows the engine being throttled across a wide range of thrusts by varying the speed of the electric motor. Electric motor-driven throttling allows for higher accuracy and rapid response - important features for handling complex trajectories. Also, regarding flight readiness, this test is a key milestone towards firing a cluster of engines together. Additionally, this system continues to use our signature single-piece engine that Agnikul has always used. Along with the patented engine, many subsystems of the pump were also 3D-printed and assembled at our AS9100D certified facility - Rocket Factory - 1. The motor drives and associated control software were also fully designed and developed in-house. Humbled to announce the successful firing of our single piece Agnite engine. Agnite engines power Agnibaan’s booster stage. These engine chambers are a full meter long, fully 3d printed as a single piece of hardware and made of Inconel. Agnite engines are driven by pumps that are controlled and operated by electric motors. Thanks to ISRO & IN-SPACe for their constant support and to IIT Madras for being our home turf from which this kind of technology is built. This Agnite engine was printed, depowdered and post processed in the same machines that we inaugurated as a part of our Large Format Additive Metal Manufacturing facility (LFAMM) towards the end of last year. This milestone is also significant for us because it completes one end-to-end cycle of design, manufacturing, assembly and testing of our larger engines, in-house. Amazing work by the team in pulling off a few world firsts here. - world’s first single piece engine of this size being fired - world’s largest inconel only engine - world’s only electric motor fed, semi cryo engine of this size and the list continues. However, this is not a race to be the world's first, it is a race to be the world's best & to be the world's most useful technology for launching small satellites to orbit. This comes right after firing a cluster of 3 semi cryogenic engines that happened last month. Humbled to share this dual-engine firing video, where both of our in-house electric motor–driven, pump-fed, single-piece engines reached thermal steady state and demonstrated uniform system performance over 49 seconds. Quick start of engines is important to achieve higher payload capability and better overall control of the vehicle after stage separation. We successfully demonstrated a quick start of our 1 meter long, single piece, fully 3d printed, semi cryogenic Agnite engine. The angular acceleration (rotations per second gained every second) that was achieved here is truly humbling. One advantage of liquid propellant rocket engines is that the lower stage of the vehicle can be started, checked and then flown on the launchpad. Such a procedure demands extremely rapid pump ramp up times - this is what this test validated for us. Repeatability in performance is what differentiates a working prototype from a working subsystem. Humbled to share a video of the repeatability test performed on our single piece, fully 3d printed, semicryogenic, 1 meter long Agnite engine. Seeing the pressure and temperature plots from the previous test match the same plots from the next test gives amazing confidence to proceed towards stage level testing. With steady progress on clustering electric motor driven engines, single piece engines at larger thrust levels and rapid additive manufacturing, we are getting ever so close to flying these engines on our operational launch vehicles. Thanks to ISRO & IN-SPACe for their constant support and guidance. Of course, none of this is even possible without the help of the entire IIT Madras ecosystem.
