Anti-ICE – GardaWorld Protest in Montreal Today I took part in the anti-ICE protest in Montreal and got a taste of tear gas as the Montreal riot police dispersed the crowd. A few snowballs thrown in their direction triggered a heavy handed response. Outside Guarda World HQ they deployed chemical irritants, beat their shields and charged at the crowd on several occasions while people were leaving. Apparently, protecting ICE collaborators is more important than free speech. We gathered outside GardaWorld HQ to denounce the contracts they have with ICE and the Trump administration. ICE is rounding up, detaining, killing, and brutalizing immigrants and American citizens without oversight, restraint or the sligtest reguard for human rights. GardaWorld is offering support services and staffing the notorious “Alligator Alcatraz” prison. To make matters worse, GardaWorld is receiving subsidies from the Quebec government. This is happening while our public services are being gutted, while public transit is being cut, while people are struggling just to pay rent and buy food. Canadian corporations should not be complicit in Trump’s anti-immigrant hit squad, which has already claimed the lives of so many innocent people. At a time when several Quebec political parties are turning up the anti-immigrant rhetoric and idolizing Trump, we must stay vigilant that Quebec does not follow the path of the United States. The Green Party of Quebec stands in opposition to GardaWorld’s affiliation with ICE, against our paycheques subsidizing their operations, against Trump’s fascistic anti-immigrant crusade, and against the anti-immigrant toxicity that is becoming more and more present in our politics. The attached video is my account of what took place. The police response was heavy handed and while being pushed back from Guarda World HQ the riot police stopped people from leaving the group, even preventing people from taking a bus away from the sene just minutes before we were charged at by a separate group of riot police. I condemn the Montreal Police's actions at this protest. Alex Tyrrell Leader of the Green Party of Quebec

Today, with Yves Engler and comrades, we disrupted the "Climate Solutions" conference in Montreal. This conference was set up by the notorious Jewish National Fund, an organization that engages in greenwashing by giving a “green” spin to land theft, colonialism and the IDF. David Suzuki did the right thing by canceling his speaking engagement. However, Québec’s newly appointed minister of the environment, Pascale Déry, and the mayor of Montréal chose to participate and give speeches while ignoring calls to dissociate. Former Québec premier Jean Charest attended the conference and rushed by our protest as we yelled "shame". This is one of the worst kinds of greenwashing. They put on an environmental conference to lure unsuspecting environmentalists into attending and then use their presence as leverage to promote genocide. They almost got Suzuki! There is nothing green about planting trees on stolen Palestinian land. Upon our arrival, a small group of police officers were hostile, threatening and attempted to completely shut down the protest, saying, “yelling in public is illegal.” I quickly asserted our democratic rights by immediately contradicting this unlawful and abusive order, telling the offending officer point blank: “This is a protest. We are exercising our rights to free speech.” That quickly set the tone, and the officers immediately backed off, which was good, but the illegal order should never have been given in the first place. The same officers were later seen posing for selfies with a conference organizer and drinking beverages handed out at the event. Montreal should be a peace city. I am deeply ashamed as a Montrealer that our mayor would speed at such an event. Free Palestine!
