Stellantis closing the Luton factory is devastating for the 1,100 workers. It’ll be convenient to blame this on the ZEV Mandate, but that isn’t the full picture; after all Luton doesn’t currently make an EV and it exports most of its production. It’s down to a combination of headwinds (including Chinese EV competition) the European auto industry has been facing and we musn’t roll back progress being made with EVs although I would support greater flexibility on the annual targets.

The tragic news of job cuts at Ford is a result of misinterpreting the direction of the market. At a time when the market is crying out for affordable EVs, Ford have pivoted their electric offering towards higher-end crossover SUV models, like the Capri and Explorer. More expensive cars results in a lower volume of sales. My thoughts speaking to BBC News👇

A pleasure to talk with Times Radio this morning about U.K. new car sales for 2024, up 2.6%. EV’s took 19.6% marketshare in the year and a massive 31% in December. Petrol (-4.4%) & Diesel (-13.6%) down with growth in HEV (+9.6%) & PHEV (+18.3%). Co2 down -6.2% at 102.1g/km. Top selling car Ford Puma, top EV Tesla Y and SUVs become the biggest segment overtaking the super mini. EV mandate at 22% will be met by the industry in 2024 through flexibility built into the legislation. Gross incentives on EV probably at a similar level to ICE but more work required on deployment of chargers; long story short, the ZEV mandate is working Jonathan Reynolds
