I think the govt need to do 4 things: 1 intro more flexibility in ZEV mandate 2 reintro incentives to boost demand for EVs 3 build out charging infrastructure much more quickly 4 industrial strategy to properly back the industry (we submitted our response to Invest 2035 yday).

I would love to hear Trump-supporter Elon Musk’s thoughts on this considering he said in the past that his goal at Tesla was to speed up EV adoption and he embraced competition if it meant more EVs. Trump: "I will end the electric vehicle mandate on day one, thereby saving the auto industry from complete obliteration; and savings US customers thousands and thousands of dollars per car." This will do one really big thing… help Tesla immensely while making other automakers pull back on EV production … but let’s keep subsidizing oil. I’m not attacking Musk. I’m genuinely curious his thoughts.

Petrol (-4.4%) & Diesel (-13.6%) down with growth in HEV (+9.6%) & PHEV (+18.3%). Co2 down -6.2% at 102.1g/km. Top selling car Ford Puma, top EV Tesla Y and SUVs become the biggest segment overtaking the super mini. Pay attention to the strategy Mark Carney is trying to execute with Canada's auto industry: "We view the future of automotive as being low emission, electric, and connected. We’re seeing this as an opportunity, working with Japanese companies, working with Korean companies, working with German companies, working with other companies, the Detroit Three as they come to it..." The precieved threat is that US automakers and manufacturing will leave Canada, especially if there is a CUSMA renegotiation. US automakers have recently took huge EV related hits and pivoted. Other automakers won't expand into Canada just based on having a share of Canada's auto industry. So Canada is implementing a tariff (credit) system for local makers and introducing all the ZEV mandates that will favour these automakers thus pushing more of the supply of products to them. Also the billions in ZEV industry related subsidies. The bet is that any US based companies leaving will be replaced by Asian companies and that when Donald Trump is gone the US will pivot back towards EV transition and pricing mechanism and Canada's auto industry will be positioned for that.

John toured NIO's factory in China. They built an upscale EV for under $10k and went from the first shovel in the ground to the first car off the line in just 17 months. He said China knew it would always be behind in ICE cars, so it pushed aggressively into EVs to leapfrog to the next technology and gain an advantage over the rest of the world. "Going to their factory and seeing, number one, how quickly that factory is built. And second, the factory automation -- much of the process was done via robotics. Looking at the auto plants we have in the US, we still have a plant that was originally built a 100 years ago, operating outside of Chicago. The average age of a US plant is roughly 40 years now. They've been upgraded over time but I don't think they replicate what's happening with robotics in China. This combination of being able to do things really quickly with a skilled but low-cost labor force and robotics has just allowed China to create a quality product at a price that nobody in the rest of the world's really been able to figure out yet."

We discussed the most important issues and covered all challenges – energy, strong pressure on Russia and the adoption of the 19th sanctions package, frozen Russian assets, the SAFE instrument, Ukraine’s path to the European Union and the opening of negotiating clusters, as well as defense support, including joint production. And separately, the issue of the Special Tribunal. A decision has been made on the allocation of EU funds. This is important. It shows that we are talking about justice, and there are practical steps toward it already, not just calls for it.

We are working to make as much progress as possible during this period on opening negotiating clusters and on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. We discussed this today with the President of Cyprus NikosChristodoulides, and I am counting on productive cooperation. The President and I talked about strengthening sanctions against Russia, which must remain in place as long as Russia’s aggression and occupation continue. We also touched on reinforcement of our air defense, the production and supply of drones, and Cyprus’s participation in the PURL initiative and SAFE instrument.
