This day, we officially commission the Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital in Kisumu. This is a landmark investment that will restore sight and restore hope for thousands of people across Kisumu, Western Kenya, and the wider East African region. The facility is offering optical and general eye-care services, including specialised and surgical procedures. It is, arguably, one of the largest and most comprehensive eye-care facilities in this region of Africa. We are deeply grateful to Lions International for this transformative investment in the health and wellbeing of our people. This is a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when good governance creates an environment that inspires confidence, attracts investment, and brings together government and development partners in service of our people. For us in Kisumu, this is more than a hospital. It is an investment in human dignity, productivity and opportunity. It means that many people who would otherwise travel long distances or go without treatment can now access quality eye care closer to home. I stepped in because I believe our society can and must do better, and that belief demands action, not comfort. As Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels argued, history is shaped by struggle. You don’t have to agree with them to see the pattern: progress has never come from neutrality.This path has a cost. It always does. But the alternative complacency dressed up as patience is far more expensive. I’m not claiming to have all the answers. I’m one voice among many pushing back, asking harder questions, and refusing to accept “that’s just how things are” as a final answer. You don’t have to agree with me.
