Since I started walking, I have been eating British military rations for almost three meals a day, every day. And I have one question: Why does every single package contain beans? I understand they are filling. I understand they have protein. I understand they are practical for military rations. But the things currently happening inside my body are catastrophically terrible. As I walk down the highway, releasing what can only be described as biological warfare, I keep thinking the same thing: Thank God I am not trapped in a blindage with a group of men right now. #british #military #rations

For those who don’t know me, my name is April Huggett. I am from #Canada and a junior sergeant in the 93rd Brigade’s Alcatraz Battalion in #Ukraine. I am currently walking from Kyiv to Kramatorsk to raise awareness and funds for my soldiers. Today, I officially crossed the 100 kilometer mark. Now I am looking forward to some much-needed rest while I wait out the worst of the sun and the possible rain. I found shelter beneath a bridge, and while it may have its ups and downs, right now I am simply grateful to have found a safe place to stop. I am feeling optimistic, proud, and ready to keep moving. I’ve been sharing a lot of videos from my journey from Kyiv to Kramatorsk, but I want to stop for a moment and remind the world why I am doing this. This walk is not about proving how far I can go. It is about the soldiers who cannot leave their positions. The men defending Ukraine while their shelters are destroyed, their equipment is lost, and the world slowly turns its attention elsewhere. I am walking because they still need us. They need thermal drones. They need equipment. They need their positions rebuilt. They need to know that people are still watching, still listening, and still willing to stand beside them. Every kilometer I walk is for the men I serve with. For those still fighting. For those we have lost. For the soldiers carrying more pain than most people will ever understand. I can carry sore feet. I can carry exhaustion. I can carry this road. I have officially made it to the cafe slash tire repair shop on the highway in Panfyly, where I ordered borscht and varenyky. After walking through the rain, I cannot explain how excited I am for a hot meal before continuing the rest of today’s journey. This is the first day since I started walking that I have seen any real cooling weather or water falling from the sky, and right now, I am incredibly grateful for it. Foreshadowing… More than anything, I am grateful for every person following this journey, sharing it, supporting my soldiers, and donating to help us rebuild the positions being defended and destroyed at this very moment. While I am walking, my soldiers are still holding the line. Every donation helps us replace what is being lost and gives the next men going into those positions a better chance of coming home. I am set up in my tent for the night, with my poncho stretched out as best as I could manage in the dark. Ignore me shoving everything into my backpack so I can prop up my feet. First, thank you to everyone who continues to share my journey, donate to my battalion, and help me support my soldiers. Every share and every donation matters more than you know. But I also want to take a moment to say something, not for the person who zoomed in on a photograph of my face to mock the peach fuzz, but for every woman who might see something like that and suddenly feel ashamed of her own body. Hair on a woman’s body is normal. Peach fuzz is normal. Chin hairs are normal. Hormonal changes are normal. Bodies change after pregnancy, with age, with stress, and throughout our lives. Some women remove their facial hair, and some do not. I do not dermaplane, and I have no intention of starting because somebody on the internet decided my natural face was something to ridicule. I have darker hairs on my chin that I pluck. I am not embarrassed to say that. I am a human being. Women are constantly held to impossible beauty standards. Men experience it too. We are taught to inspect ourselves, criticize ourselves, and feel ashamed of the completely normal bodies we live in. Please do not allow cruel people to decide how you feel about yourself. Your body does not have to be flawless to be beautiful. You do not have to change yourself to deserve confidence, respect, or love. Love yourself. Take up space. I have made it to 145 kilometers. I am one hour away from reaching 150 kilometers and from the supply box waiting for me there. Fresh socks, food, water, and the small things that feel like everything after this many kilometers. The hardest part is my feet. I am not tired. I still have the strength to keep moving. But every step hurts now. And every time the pain becomes loud, I think about my soldiers. I think about what they endure every day. I think about the pain they carry, the lives they have sacrificed, and the brothers we have already lost. I think about every soldier still standing on the front line, not only mine, but every defender of Ukraine. Then sore feet feel very small. So I keep walking. Thank you for following this journey. It is 4:45 in the morning on the second day of my walk from #Kyiv to #Kramatorsk. Vlad from the Okko came to see me with homemade cutlets and pilaf his mother made for my breakfast. He refused to let me leave without eating. And that is Ukrainians. They can be carrying more than most people could imagine, and still they will show up with food in their hands and kindness in their hearts. They will give what they have, even when they do not have much to give. That is why I am walking. I am walking for the people who still choose goodness in the middle of war. For the families who feed others while their own country burns. For the soldiers in my battalion who stand between these homes and everything trying to destroy them. I am the only foreigner in my battalion. I am one of the only voices here that can reach beyond Ukraine. So I am using it. These men are not only defending one line on a map. They are defending homes, mothers, fields, cities, memories, and the future of Europe. I truly believe that. I need your help to bring silent protection to our soldiers. I am a #Canadian woman serving as a medic in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. I have seen what this war does up close. I have seen soldiers joke through exhaustion because if they stop laughing, they might break. I have seen villages emptied, animals left behind, homes turned into ruins, and good people carrying more pain than any human should ever have to carry. And still, every day, our people keep going. But courage does not stop drones. Hope does not replace medical supplies, batteries, radios, vehicles, generators, or the equipment that keeps our soldiers alive. That is why I am asking for help. The Alcatraz Battalion needs support urgently. We are fighting with everything we have, but we are constantly short of what we need. Every delay costs us. Every missing piece of equipment puts someone’s son, daughter, husband, wife, brother, sister, or friend in more danger. I know people are tired. I know the world is overwhelmed. I know there are a million causes asking for your attention. But please don’t look away from Ukraine. Behind every fundraiser is a real person trying to survive another day. I am rested, and although my face is swollen, I am in good spirits. I want to thank every single person following my journey across Ukraine, sharing my story, and supporting my soldiers. Because in the end, this is not about how far I can walk. It is about the men still fighting in Donetsk Oblast while the world slowly looks away. My soldiers are still in the trenches. Their positions are still being destroyed. They are still fighting, sacrificing, and holding the line every hour of every day. Even when we cannot physically stand beside them, we can make sure they know they are not alone. Very proud to have known Rebekah Maciorowski since the early days of 2023. We first met in Pokrovsk, I gave her tourniquets, but over time she became a sort of mentor and most importantly, my friend. The hard work she does for her soldiers taught me that we should go above and beyond our duties. That by doing all the little things we bring up morale and keep our men alive. Just like me, Becca doesn’t post all her work in the background, but you can be sure she never rests. I’m exhausted mentally and physically but tonight I found out we urgently need thermal drones. Without them, we are almost paralyzed at night. I have a chance to get at least one on Monday. Maybe two, if I can somehow make it happen. But I can’t do it alone. This is me asking directly, desperately, and honestly: please help. A lot of people have been asking where I am and if I am ok. I am preparing. In two weeks, I will begin my first vacation in nearly two years. I won't be spending it on a beach. I won't be traveling abroad. I won't be resting. Instead, I will walk home. From Maidan and the Alley of Heroes in Kyiv to Kramatorsk. Hundreds of kilometers. Roughly 50 kilometers every day. In the summer heat, where temperatures regularly reach 28°C and above. I have my own health challenges, and there will be days when every step hurts. But compared to what my soldiers endure every day, that discomfort is insignificant. I am doing this because it is easy for the frontline to feel distant when you are not living beside it. For my soldiers, there is no distance. The war is present in every day, every decision, and every kilometer of ground they defend. But my soldiers are still there. They are still defending #Ukraine. They are still living in frontline villages and cities. They are still carrying the weight of a war that most people only see through a screen. Donbas is Ukraine. And Donbas is not some distant place on a map. It is home. My soldiers are former prisoners. Even if they are granted a vacation, it does not look like yours or mine. They will still remain close. They do not get to simply walk away from it. So I am asking for your help. This walk is about awareness, but awareness alone does not keep soldiers alive. Equipment does. Vehicles do. Communications do. Drones do. Recently, our only ground drone struck a mine and was destroyed. That wasn't just a piece of equipment. It was a lifeline. It delivered water. It carried supplies. It reduced risk to the soldiers who depended on it. Now it is gone. And what we have in the field is what we have. That is not a position any unit should be forced into. My goal is to raise a minimum of $50,000 during this journey so that my battalion can continue operating, continue adapting, and continue bringing our people home. Every kilometer I walk is for the soldiers who cannot leave. Every kilometer is for the fallen whose flags stand in the Alley of Heroes. Every kilometer is for Donbas. Every kilometer is for Ukraine.
