For too long, we have been distracted by reductive debates about whether the blasphemy law is “Islamic” or not, ignoring the actual substance of the law, its reasoning, its motivations, its genealogy, all of which are colonial impositions that have radically disfigured our tradition. It is time to create our own field of conversation, to open up public discourse. This episode makes the case that Pakistan’s blasphemy law is a bidʿah, an (colonial) innovation that transformed the way theological difference has historically been expressed, debated and adjudicated among Muslims. This bidʿah has replaced centuries of legal reasoning with a model based on individual “hurt sentiment”; a concept entirely foreign to classical jurisprudence. “Blasphemy” is no longer judged based on the meaning and intent of something; it has become a matter of how offended someone feels. This episode travels back a few hundred years and compares two cases of intra-Muslim conflict that involved “majrooh jazbaat” (wounded sentiments), demonstrating that where once ikhtilāf was a rehmat for the ummah, the colonial project has turned it into a lanat. #talkabout295C

Please watch this documentary on 1953 Anti-Ahmadi riots, a moment that eerily mirrors the current crackdown against TLP. In 1953 the military state crushed anti-ahmadi mobs with pure violence without any interest in dismantling the structures of violence that produced them. Instead of addressing networks of financiers, trade unions, NGOs and the ideology of otherizing Ahmadis, the state was just interested in the bodies of protestors (most of whom were ofcourse working class). Instead, the movement turned them into martyrs, a great myth/moral story to those that were meant to be "erased". State violence, then and now, is the process of correcting a symptom instead of disease; which in 1953 paved the road to the strongest Anti Ahmadi movement in 1974 leading to Bhutto government enacting the 2nd amendment. All the resentment from that state crackdown was redirected back to Ahmadis and the exponential volatility of blasphemy politics in Pakistan. Also keep in mind how deep these guys are in trade/worker union politics. Speak to a few TLP Rickshaw Unions folks and you will see many members who don't really care about blasphemy but have some kind of a mutual aid network in exchange for votes/prtests- some are not even barailvis.
