An Assyrian Priest chants in Aramaic in front of Pope Francis in 2016. This is Father Seraphim. He leads the Monastery of the Thirteen Holy Assyrian Fathers in Georgia. An extremely rare individual. He is an important figure in the spread of Aramaic into Eastern Orthodoxy.

BREAKING: Assyrians in Iraq are staging a peaceful protest against Christian land theft. This is happening today. Land encroachment by Kurds in the KRG continues. Even when encroachments are deemed illegal, judgements are not being enforced. This is official and unofficial. It could be a villager building on land that isn’t his, it could be the government rezoning an area that isn’t owned by them. Going on for decades. A few recent examples: - A plan to seize 370 acres of Assyrian land in Bakhetme was revealed in 2026. - According to the Assyrian National Broadcasting organization, over 22,239 acres of Christian land across 82 villages has been seized between 1961 & 2013 - According to one report, there are over 130 illegal village seizures in the KRG, facilitated through active involvement or passive endorsement of KRG authorities - In 2020, 117 Assyrian families lost access to 75% of their lands after the KRG reversed a law intended to protect Assyrian ownership - Ongoing dam projects in Bakrman, Dalia & Mandawa risk destroying Assyrian villages & displacing them permanently - In 2021, 1000 dunams of farmland near Erbil Airport was seized without notice or confiscation. The airport was built on confiscated Chaldean Catholic & Assyrian farmland. This is happening on the world’s watch. There are good people in the KRG who don’t want this to happen, but sadly the machine of land theft continues. There is no legal system if legal judgements aren’t enforced. This has to stop. All Assyrians in the diaspora must do their part. The tools at your disposal. Create a land registry, mobilize lawyers like Alexander Karana, Esq., and through peaceful means keep your ancestral homeland. END CHRISTIAN LAND THEFT IN IRAQ!

The next time you hear "Assyrian Christian", I want you to wrap your head around how old this nation is. Today Assyrians celebrate Kha b'Nisan, the Assyrian New Year, marking 6776 years of existence. The First of April, or Nisan in Aramaic, is derived from the Akkadian word Nisanu. It translates into "beginning" or "first". And that is no coincidence. Assyrians are the indigenous people of Mesopotamia. Many, from Kurds to Arabs, deny this reality. They divide them by Church. They call them Arab Christians. They call them Kurdish Christians. Yet they are older than Aramaic! They are older than every tourist which occupies their land. Older than the Bible. Older than the Jews. Assyrian culture existed for thousands of years before Moses. Abraham himself came from Mesopotamia! The Assyrian New Year festival is traced back to ancient tradition. People think of Assyrians today as ancient Christians. It's true, but the history is deeper. When Jewish families celebrate Passover, they are observing a calendar inherited from Mesopotamia. By the culture & civilization where "it" began. Every empire that ruled Mesopotamia — Persian, Greek, Roman, Arab, Mongol, Ottoman — tried to write Assyrians out of history. AND THEY ARE STILL TRYING. (You'll see what I mean in the comments!). Yet April 1 is a reminder. They are dwindled in number & weakened today. But they EXIST. Existence is not a given. It's getting harder & less probable. They are holding on to their culture by every last breath. As much as EVERY force of evil tries to wipe their legacy away. ܫܢܬܐ ܛܒܬܐ — Happy New Year
