Many are seized in night raids, at checkpoints, or even from hospitals, then disappeared without lawyers or contact with their families. Reports include torture, sexual assault, denial of food and medicine, and forced “confessions.” Families are threatened, forced to bury loved ones in secret, and told to lie about the cause of death to retrieve bodies often after paying bribes.
