RAW IS WAR 6/2/97 Bret Hart’s knee is messed up, so his match with Shawn Michaels at King of the Ring is cancelled. The Federation makes chicken salad out of the situation and rearranges the top of the card on this live segment on the go home show for the PPV.

I think the brawl before the bell at the start of Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels Survivor Series 1997 is out of this world. The roles are perfect, the setting is perfect, and everything that happens here is exactly as it should go. Michaels is persona non grata. He’s reviled and the Montreal crowd is here to see their badass hero kick the shit out of this little rat. Shawn gives them what they want, selling the way a heel should given the dynamics, bumping off most of the initial punches and crawling around pathetically. Bret headbutts Shawn and sells it himself before clotheslining him to the outside. He’s willing to sacrifice himself to give his enemy what he deserves. Shawn’s in the eye of the storm, and when the guys go into the crowd, they get ENGULFED by it and it means trouble for HBK, who’s in a world of pain and anytime he tries to mount some kind of comeback or counter, it gets thwarted. Piledriver attempts become back body drop bumps, he’s eating total shit at every turn. Crowd brawling isn’t the same anymore because there’s security creating so much separation between the talent and fans. The appeal here is the feeling that the wrestlers are in no man’s land, with so much humanity surrounding them and popcorn and drinks flying everywhere. Because it isn’t neutral ground, there’s the sense that Shawn Michaels is facing potential danger the longer he stays in the water. Bret Hart gets Shawn Michaels to land, only to punish him some more. There’s a sick vertical suplex on to concrete, and only after minutes of ass-kicking, and only after Bret Hart feels satisfied with his pound of flesh does he decide to bring HBK back to the ring to have a match within the bounds of the rules, and he does so dragging Shawn Michaels BY THE HEAD back to the ring, showing him to the audience like a gladiator holding a scalp that he claimed. It’s SO perfect and I truly believe that this match was on its way to being a classic before What Happened Happened™️. Even as is, it’s a great match that gets overshadowed by the screwjob.

Eric Bischoff’s March 18th 1998 appearance on TSN’s Off The Record, hosted by Michael Landsberg. This interview comes weeks after Vince McMahon’s appearance on the same show, and Eric famously declares that Stone Cold Steve Austin would be a midcarder if he was in WCW, under the likes of Hulk Hogan, Lex Luger and Randy Savage

For my money and personal tastes, professional wrestling in 2023 doesn’t get much more electrifying and exhilarating than it did in the closing stretch of Chad Gable and Gunther’s Intercontinental Championship match on last night’s RAW. Two of the absolute best in the world. The best current storyline in wrestling. I want them to fight forever.

I want everyone to watch this. The date is September 9th, 1996. The show is Monday Nitro. Sting is *believed* to have joined the nWo, who have been running roughshod over WCW and company and roster morale is down. Eric Bischoff feels extreme guilt for the monster that he feels he created. He tries to express culpability here. The Four Horsemen have taken it upon themselves to protect their turf and take these invaders to hell. There is nothing to smile about. These people have families but they know they may not come home to them. The situation is gravely serious. This is how you build a WarGames match.

Kevin Owens lost Sami Zayn on the way up here and Zayn had the wherewithal to recover the spot by fighting back with one last flurry before the lights went out for good. An organic moment that is emblematic of who Zayn is as a pro wrestler, and a spot that enhanced the finish. Instincts are the most important thing in wrestling.

CM Punk was in the Performance Center on Thursday afternoon and he did some training and drills with Bron Breakker, Carmelo Hayes, Trick Williams, and Lexis King. Here’s footage of Punk giving the guys advice on standing out on the main roster, as well as some personal introspection on his involvement in the Royal Rumble.

Shame there was a gingerbread man in the ring, but I want to reiterate that Sami Zayn and Trick Williams is the best story going into mania. Also, the physical exchange on the show rocked because one thing Williams can do is punch, and Zayn has a great worked punch, and registers one back really well so when they were hitting each other back and forth it looked real good. Hope the match turns out well.

Considering how many unfocused, tonally off, mazy, and indirect promo segments populate wrestling television today, I really appreciated how CM Punk’s promo last night cut to the heart of the issue with Bron Breakker and directly sold a title fight. CM Punk has earned bravado and swagger as a winner but he emphasized what it means to be a champion. He framed the title as a Sword of Damocles, conceding that it’s all going to catch up to him and also put over his opponent huge as a threat while remaining self assured that the crown stays with him for now. It’s a simple story between a battle tested vet vs the young hot shot. It’s a prize fight, and at no point was the segment stained by the cancerous rap/diss battle approach that has infected most head to head promos this century.
