For my money and personal tastes, professional wrestling in 2023 doesn’t get much more electrifying and exhilarating than it did in the closing stretch of Chad Gable and Gunther’s Intercontinental Championship match on last night’s RAW. Two of the absolute best in the world. The best current storyline in wrestling. I want them to fight forever.

Kevin Owens lost Sami Zayn on the way up here and Zayn had the wherewithal to recover the spot by fighting back with one last flurry before the lights went out for good. An organic moment that is emblematic of who Zayn is as a pro wrestler, and a spot that enhanced the finish. Instincts are the most important thing in wrestling.

Shame there was a gingerbread man in the ring, but I want to reiterate that Sami Zayn and Trick Williams is the best story going into mania. Also, the physical exchange on the show rocked because one thing Williams can do is punch, and Zayn has a great worked punch, and registers one back really well so when they were hitting each other back and forth it looked real good. Hope the match turns out well.

Considering how many unfocused, tonally off, mazy, and indirect promo segments populate wrestling television today, I really appreciated how CM Punk’s promo last night cut to the heart of the issue with Bron Breakker and directly sold a title fight. CM Punk has earned bravado and swagger as a winner but he emphasized what it means to be a champion. He framed the title as a Sword of Damocles, conceding that it’s all going to catch up to him and also put over his opponent huge as a threat while remaining self assured that the crown stays with him for now. It’s a simple story between a battle tested vet vs the young hot shot. It’s a prize fight, and at no point was the segment stained by the cancerous rap/diss battle approach that has infected most head to head promos this century.

A couple days ago CM Punk did an interview where he said that he did professional wrestling and Roman Reigns did cinema. Where that shows itself is in presentation on TV. Stories don’t NEED to be furthered exclusively through overproduced promo trains. Tonight’s angle took place within the framework of a scheduled live interview, the heel crashed it to no theme cue, the World’s champ went back and forth deliberating with the authority figure and as a babyface, invited the fight. At the core of everything, the subject of debate and conflict was the World Heavyweight Championship. The best title reigns have a broad story being told and it allows for there to be a narrative throughline from match to match as injuries accumulate and the psyche of the athlete evolves and changes as they go through challengers. Balor’s part of the segment had a sense of disruption and CM Punk behaved and spoke like a classical champion.
