The northern United States will trade Amazon rainforest-like levels of humidity for wildfire smoke this week. In British Columbia, 11 new fires have been reported so far this weekend and a provincewide state of emergency has been declared — as smoke drifts east.

The good news? This will probably be the last really bad wildfire smoke day in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast for a little while. The bad news? It's going to be a bad wildfire smoke and thunderstorm day, and rain could leave behind smudges of soot and ash on outdoor surfaces.

Well, this isn't great. Tons of smoke from wildfires in the Northwest will pump across the United States and Canada in the days ahead. In the East, air quality won't be much of an issue, but haze will become noticeable on Sunday and Monday.

Well, this is bad. As winds shift on Monday and Tuesday, lots of wildfire smoke is forecast to blow toward the coast in the Pacific Northwest, reaching Portland, Seattle and Vancouver — greatly reducing air quality. Some smoke will also spill into California.

Here comes the haze 😶‍🌫️ Wildfire smoke will pour from Oregon, Washington and British Columbia all the way to Florida by Monday. Most of it will remain high above the ground, but poor air quality is likely in the Northwest and possible in the Plains.

In an unusual twist, Tropical Storm Bertha could ingest some wildfire smoke later Wednesday and Thursday as it tracks near Louisiana. This extra dry air is one of several factors that will keep the storm weak.

The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic can see clearly now, the smoke is almost gone. Meanwhile, it's still a smoke-fest in the Midwest — and now the Northwest too. But some good news: Rain on the fires in Ontario this week will reduce their smoke outputs.

It's a steady stream of wildfire haze for the East Coast in the days ahead. Most of the smoke will remain high in the atmosphere, although small amounts could reach the ground. The smoke will drift far out over the Atlantic, toward Bermuda and the Azores.

At this point, wildfire smoke has become part of the daily weather forecast. A thick haze will reach the Midwest on Monday, then spread into the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and parts of the Southeast by Tuesday — though impacts on air quality are expected to be minimal.

Do the skies seem hazy? It's not because of wildfires in Canada — now it's mostly because of three big fires in Oregon. On Wednesday, smoke will stretch 2,500 miles from near Seattle to Boston. Air quality won't be affected in the East, but it will be poor in the Northwest.

Wildfire smoke will take an unusual path in the days ahead, hugging the California coast. Similar to the marine layer, low concentrations of smoke will slip through coastal gaps and valleys, reaching San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Monterey.

These are the rare "interstate-induced clouds" that formed over Houston's highways on Tuesday morning, wowing meteorologists. As roads warmed faster than the surrounding land after sunrise, very humid air above them rose, cooled and quickly condensed into rows of cumulus clouds.

#HudsonValley: flooding, wind damage likely tonight, may cause school delays/closings on Wednesday 😵‍💫 Before the rain, 1-3 inches of wet snow in Sullivan and western Ulster County between noon - 4:00 pm may cause early dismissals or lead to the cancellation of after-school activities. Elsewhere across the mid-Hudson Valley, any wet snow that falls this afternoon is unlikely to stick to paved surfaces. After 4:00 pm, the main precipitation type will be rain, and it’s expected to become heavy in the evening. The forecast for Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning is a tumultuous one: - Periods of heavy rain and maybe even a thunderstorm between 6:00 pm - 3:00 am, with rainfall amounts ranging from 2-4 inches (a month’s worth or more) - Rapid snow melt, especially when the temperature reaches the low-to-mid 50s after midnight - Strong-to-damaging wind gusts of 40-60 mph between 6:00 pm - 3:00 am Possible impacts include: - Ponding of water and flooding on streets, particularly in urban and low-lying areas - Flooding of rivers, creeks, and streams, some of which may rise out of their banks - Scattered-to-widespread power outages and downed tree branches; the combination of sodden grounds and strong winds may cause some trees to topple If you live in a flood prone location, expect flooding tonight — take extra steps to protect your property. Some school delays and/or closings will likely occur on Wednesday because of this storm, although it isn’t possible to pinpoint exactly which towns will experience the worst impacts. The December 18th storm is comparable to this storm, although the flooding and wind damage chance looks higher this time around. Although the worst of the weather will be over by daybreak Wednesday, strong wind gusts of 30-40 mph are expected on Wednesday afternoon, affecting cleanup efforts. Another significant rain and wind storm is likely on Friday night.
