One of the best pieces of advice I ever got in my Jiu-Jitsu journey… When I was a blue belt juvenile, some of my training partners kept saying I was using too much strength. In my mind, I didn’t think I was. My instructor came to talk to me and asked, “Bernardo, are you using too much strength?” I said, “I guess so, since everyone is saying it.” Then he asked, “Are you getting tired?” I told him, “No, I have good cardio and I have been training and lifting a lot.” He looked at me and said, “Then keep using your strength.” That advice stayed with me forever. For me, the main lesson is simple. In Jiu-Jitsu, the right thing is whatever works for you. If you are doing something and it works, do not let anyone tell you it is wrong or that you should change it. Whatever works is the right way. What are your thoughts?

In my humble opinion, the biggest mistake in Jiu-Jitsu is “quitting” for a few months or years. I totally understand that sometimes life gets in the way, but my two cents here would always be to just decrease the frequency instead of quitting completely. If you can’t train three times per week anymore, train twice a week. If that’s not possible, train once a week — or even once every other week, or once a month. But don’t quit. Normally, nothing good comes from quitting. You forget your moves, lose mobility, lose confidence, lose muscle, and so on. Any training frequency will always be ten times better than totally quitting. What are your thoughts on this?

The day basketball-type athletes start BJJ, we’ll all be in trouble 🤣 Back in 2012, I was in Europe (Poland) teaching seminars, and I got injured and ended up doing physiotherapy with the city’s basketball team. As soon as I saw those guys up close, I thought, “If this type of athlete ever learns Jiu-Jitsu, we’re in big trouble.” Haha At that time, I was the Pan Ams Black Belt Open Class champion and second place at Worlds Open Class (2011). I was around 6’3 and 220 pounds, and those guys looked like 6’7 and 250 pounds, but incredibly fit, long, strong, flexible, and explosive. I remember thinking, if they ever learn BJJ and get good at it, the open class would become just a bunch of people like them. And when you look back at the history, it feels like every generation keeps getting taller and stronger. First it was Amaury Bitetti winning the open class, years later Ronaldo “Jacaré,” then Roger Gracie, then Buchecha (I was able to win it once), but it really feels like the open class is becoming more and more about the big, tall athletes. Sometimes I wonder if one day it will look like basketball hehehe What are your thoughts?

What do you all think? JiuJitsu rewards the one who knows a lot about a few moves AND a little about a lot of moves. I personally fully agree to this quote, and I always thought exactly like this, but had never been able to articulate it so well in just one quote as John (Danaher) did.

There’s nothing wrong with choosing who you roll with… One of the biggest mistakes I see hobbyist BJJ practitioners make is feeling like they’re forced to roll with everyone. In my opinion, you don’t have to roll with anyone. We only get one body, and we’re all here for the long run. So it’s totally fine to communicate, politely and in a friendly way, when you don’t feel comfortable rolling with someone. If someone is much younger than you, or much heavier, or just rude, it might be a better option to avoid rolling with that person. It’s all about preserving your body for the long run and making sure you stay on the mats for years to come. Would love to hear your thoughts…
