Introducing…#TheKingCenter’s 2026 King Holiday Observance Theme and Signature Image Each year, we at The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center carefully select a theme for King Holiday Observance and the calendar year — a theme that reflects the enduring work of my parents, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King. Our 2026 King Holiday Observance theme is “Mission Possible 2: Building Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way.” This year’s theme is a call to action—to both envision + create the #BelovedCommunity. We create the Beloved Community by building community in our families, neighborhoods, schools, social media, and other areas of life. Building community encompasses addressing real needs: cultivating humane and just systems, expanding access to housing and education, enacting compassionate legislation, and fostering spaces where everyone can thrive. To unite a nation, we must lead with courage and “other-centeredness,” practice love-centered communication, and work to transform unjust systems—together. And what does it mean to do it “the nonviolent way”? It means embracing and employing Kingian Nonviolence (Nonviolence 365) —living love and justice every day of the year. A few years ago, a Republican politician in my home state of Georgia told me that the party’s proposed changes to voting procedures were about “making it easier to vote and harder to cheat.” I didn’t agree that this was the true goal then and I certainly don’t believe that’s the goal of the #gerrymandering efforts by #Texas Republicans. And that’s CERTAINLY not the goal of issuing arrest warrants for the Democratic legislators who, in protest, are refusing to show up for the vote on the unjust redistricting. Let’s be clear: This week, as we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the #VotingRightsAct, which has been gutted by Supreme Court decisions, voter suppression rages on.

“I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today - my own government.” Daddy spoke these words in his speech ‘Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence,’ delivered on April 4, 1967, exactly one year before he was assassinated. 57 years later, the United States government continues to perpetuate and be complicit in the Triple Evils of 1) Militarism/War, 2) Poverty/Excessive Materialism, and 3) Racism. The Triple Evils are on full display in Washington, D.C., where the National Guard is on the streets of predominately Black, low-income communities. These National Guard members were deployed by President Trump under the guise of concern about increasing crime. What’s really happening is the devastating interconnection of militarism, poverty, and racism. Because if “help” was the true goal, then our government would invest in programs that demonstrate care for community, not in militarized policing of community. Today, members of the King family joined The National Park Service in Atlanta in celebrating the upcoming (July 4th) reopening of the Martin Luther King Jr. Birth Home, in which my father was born. I shared my thoughts about the reopening in my remarks at today’s gathering. Listen to some of those thoughts in the video. The Birth Home on Auburn Avenue is part of the larger Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park around the Sweet Auburn neighborhood. The Birth Home has been closed for restoration since late 2023. The Birth Home is right up the street and within walking distance of The King Center; however, The King Center is not a part of the MLK, Jr. National Historical Park. My father's words remain as relevant today as they were when he first spoke them. We are once again confronted with choices that test our values, our humanity, and our commitment to peace. The questions before us have not changed: Will we answer violence with more violence, or will we choose the difficult but transformative path of nonviolence? History reminds us that peace requires courage, discipline, and moral conviction. May we have the wisdom to choose it. #MLK #Nonviolence365 #BelovedCommunity

I don’t deny the power of my father’s most well-known speech, ‘I Have a Dream.’ However, its power and popularity (with focus on its conclusion) have been misused to weaken its clear messaging about ending racism, stopping police brutality, ensuring voting rights, and eradicating economic injustice. Why didn’t Pastor Lorenzo Sewell pray these parts of the Dream during President Trump’s Inauguration? Because the inconvenient truth (that disallows embracing the pipe dream that racism no longer exists in this country) is that Project 2025 and some of the plans that his voters encouraged POTUS to roll out on day one are reflective of an ‘America’ that denies the comprehensive King. That’s why those who quote Daddy out of context and without the spirit of nonviolence don’t pray using my father’s ’The Other America,’ ‘The Three Evils of Society, ‘Beyond Vietnam’…or ‘Letter from Birmingham Jail.’ It’s simpler to distort the rousing conclusion of #IHaveADream and twist it to push a narrative that authentic, compassionate work to prevent and stop discrimination is actually discriminatory. It is much harder to distort #LetterFromBirminghamJail’s call to conscience to #Christians and its powerfully relevant teaching on nonviolent direct action, injustice anywhere, devotion to order over justice, doing what’s right, and disobeying unjust laws. Who can validate inhumane legislation by integrating prayers about civil disobedience and freedom being demanded by the oppressed, both topics covered in LFBJ? We need to get Daddy’s Dream right, while also realizing that, in his other speeches, sermons, and writings, including LFBJ, he provides the love-centered strategy and courageous path for realizing his Dream. And we haven’t collectively embraced that strategy or started on that path. In fact, several of the Executive Orders rescinded by President Trump this week blatantly disregard both the strategy and the path. So keep praying…but don’t pray the Dream in pursuit of false peace, which cries for unity while decrying inclusive and equitable policies and practices. Pray the Dream in tandem with work for true peace, which, as my father said, is the presence of justice. #MLK #MLKDay #MissionPossibleMLK

Dr. Phil’s comments last night missed a critical truth about America’s foundation. My father, #MLK, challenged the myth that our prosperity came solely from “hard work”. He said: "Again we have deluded ourselves into believing the myth that capitalism grew and prospered out of the Protestant ethic of hard work and sacrifice. The fact is that capitalism was built on the exploitation and suffering of Black slaves and continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor – both Black and white, both here and abroad.” – The Three Evils of Society, 1967. We must confront our history honestly. DEI isn’t a trend; it’s a step toward justice, addressing the systemic imbalances that linger from our past. Real strength is found when all people have an equal chance to thrive. #MLK #TruthToPower #DEI
