Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey, who has missed more than 100 votes since early March, says he will return to work in person "within a matter of weeks.” When pressed by CBS News’ Caitlin Huey-Burns how it was acceptable for a member of Congress to be absent for months without giving further explanation, House Speaker Mike Johnson said "it's not a scandalous thing at all” and that “people are entitled to get sick.” Johnson added that he spoke with Kean late last week and he was in "good spirits" and is "anxious to come back in person."

Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie pushed back on criticism from President Trump and GOP leadership ahead of a costly and closely watched primary against former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, telling CBS News’ Ed O'Keefe the race has become a referendum on party loyalty, foreign policy and outside political spending. Massie is one of the few Republicans in Congress who has opposed the war with Iran and has voted with Democrats to rein in Trump's authority to carry out further military action without congressional authorization. He has also voted against symbolic resolutions backing Israel, as well as a resolution condemning antisemitism that he argued promoted censorship.

A 17-year-old boy was injured in a shooting after fights broke out during a “teen takeover” event at Florida's Clearwater Beach on Sunday, police said. The teen suffered non-life-threatening injuries and several people were detained. After the shooting, officers responded to "other reports of large crowds that had gathered in other locations and were creating a disturbance” and began limiting access to the affected areas of the beach.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday that far-right sectors in the United States are coordinating with domestic groups to attack her government, escalating her rhetoric against Mexico's largest trading partner. The remarks follow a weekend rally where Sheinbaum denounced alleged interference by U.S. government agencies and business interests. Sheinbaum said she does not believe the attacks are being orchestrated by President Trump. Eight students were rescued after being trapped on a roller coaster nearly 100 feet in the air for hours in Galveston, Texas on Thursday. The riders on Iron Shark at Pleasure Pier were stuck in mid-air before rescue crews removed each student one-by-one, CBS affiliate KHOU reports.
