A former Northern Arizona University student and fraternity leader was sentenced in the death of 18-year-old pledge Colin Martinez in a hazing incident in March. Martinez died from alcohol poisoning at a house party earlier this year. Martinez’s father spoke about his son’s death. “I use this word courage because that’s what’s required when fear, self-protection, group loyalty or convenience tempt us to inaction instead of doing what another human being desperately needs us to do,” he said. Carter Eslick, the fraternity leader, was sentenced to 60 days in jail and three years of probation.

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito said the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case, which overturned Roe v. Wade, required “courage” from all of the justices in the majority. "We didn't know it when we produced the draft that was leaked, but it required courage to go ahead with that because of the implications," he said. He told CBS News' Jan Crawford that he lost friends over the Dobbs decision. And he called physical threats and harassment "quite disturbing" and "a danger for the courts."

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito said increasingly harsh criticism of the court from political leaders can be "quite damaging" to the institution. "The criticism of the court by President Biden and justices by President Biden and his administration was very harsh. And President Trump has been very harsh," he told CBS News' Jan Crawford. Alito said the court's job is to interpret the Constitution "as best we can" and apply it to the cases that come before them: "We are not part of any political movement. And we are not attempting to further any political agenda."

A surrogate, believing she was carrying a child for a single father, is actually having a baby for a Chinese billionaire who allegedly has more than 100 kids. CBS News broke the news to her. Leaked documents obtained by CBS News named the intended father as Xu Bo, a Chinese billionaire and video game executive. Xu Bo has been reported to have over 100 children through U.S. surrogates, granting them American citizenship at birth. A former partner involved in a custody lawsuit against Xu Bo claims he has as many as 300 children. He has disputed these numbers, and has said in a statement that he has custody of 12 children born through surrogacy in the U.S. CBS News' Katrina Kaufman interviewed the surrogate – who we are referring to as "Judy" to keep her identity private – who said she was blindsided to learn about Xu Bo. CBS News spoke to 32 surrogates for an investigation into the industry. Head to the linked article for more on this investigation.

Former special counsel Jack Smith was pressed by Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) on Tuesday during his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee about whether he attended a NBA game between the Atlanta Hawks and Golden State Warriors in Atlanta in early February 2024. Smith said he “definitely did not go" to an Atlanta Hawks game. "I think you've already perjured yourself," Schitt said during the exchange, calling Smith a "total dirtbag." Smith said he instead attended a Maryland-Iowa women’s basketball game to see Iowa star Caitlin Clark play. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) suggested Schmitt had confused the Iowa Hawkeyes with the Atlanta Hawks and said Smith deserved an apology.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he will attend Friday’s ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, despite criticism from former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who said Mamdani’s presence at Ground Zero would offend him. Mamdani declined to respond further to Giuliani’s comments, saying his focus will be on the families who lost loved ones and the first responders who gave everything to the city. “I love this city. I love this country,” Mamdani told reporters.
