Here's three little things I want to mention to you: prayer, penance, and acts of charity. Most of the time we think about them during Lent. We need to remind ourselves that those three things - that trifecta - are the essence of our discipleship. I mention them to you today because it's the feast of St. Peter Chrysologus, one of the fathers of the Church, and those were his three essentials! The Good Newsroom

Today I’m in my home parish of Holy Infant in Ballwin, Missouri, where I was raised. Fifty years and one month ago today, I was ordained a priest in my home parish! To be back there with them today… Alleluia! It’s a big day for me. Thank you for all your love and support as I praise almighty God for the gift of the priesthood. The Good Newsroom

This is the day we enter the conclave and I’m about to go into the Domus Sanctae Marthae, named after St. Martha, who took care of hospitality for Jesus. We leave here and go over to the Sistine Chapel every day for prayers and voting, but this is where we reside. I won’t be able to talk to you until you see the white smoke. Keep us in your prayers! The Good Newsroom

I’m still on a firecracker high from the Fourth of July! What I liked is that it revived that virtue of patriotism. I use that word purposely. Patriotism is a virtue. We’ve got to be careful, of course – the beauty of virtues is that they’re in the middle. There can be an extreme. We call that “nationalism,” which is a vice. Nationalism means we begin to deify our nation, and it takes the place of God. The Good Newsroom

One last point from Pope Leo’s letter to us: he talks about the reasons to thank God for the United States of America, and the last one he mentions is unity. We are a nation that has always tried to stay together. Diversity? You bet. Disagreement? You bet! Sometimes heated debate. But we always are one nation under God! That source of unity is one of the major reasons for the strength and vitality of the America for which we thank God as we continue to celebrate our 250th Anniversary. Thanks, Holy Father, for reminding us of those points! The Good Newsroom
