The famous Stepped Well at Hampi in India has perfectly symmetrical steps descending to the bottom, creating an inverted pyramid appearance. Curiously, it was built from greenish-black schist, rather than the granite used for most of Hampi’s other monuments. It is one of the most impressive and interesting structures I’ve seen with my own eyes.

Everything is bigger in India. At the Hoysaleswara Temple there are two enormous monolithic Nandis (bulls). The largest of the two is 9 feet long and 7 feet high. They are carved and polished so smoothly that you can see your reflection on the surface. Each Nandi sits in its own pavilion, surrounded by lathed pillars, directly facing its respective linga ✨✨
