POSSIBLE TOXIC DUST MOVING ACROSS NORTHERN UTAH 💨 Take a look at this. A wall of dust is being pushed east and south off the Great Salt Lake as thunderstorm outflow winds race across the area. Some of this dust may contain particles from the exposed lakebed, which has raised air quality concerns in recent years. It’s impossible to know exactly what’s in the dust without testing, but visibility could drop quickly, and air quality may temporarily worsen. If you’re out driving, be prepared for sudden reductions in visibility. If you have asthma or other respiratory conditions, it may be a good idea to limit time outdoors until the dust settles.

This video was sent to me by a viewer whose husband was evacuating their cabin near Eureka as the Cherry Fire exploded Friday afternoon. The flames can be seen burning on both sides of the road as he drove to safety. It’s a sobering look at just how fast this fire spread during the extreme winds and dangerous fire weather. The Cherry Fire is one of several large wildfires that rapidly grew across central Utah today, forcing evacuations, closing roads, and sending thick smoke across much of the state. If you’re in or near an evacuation area, don’t wait. Leave when you’re told. Conditions can change in minutes. Thank you to the family for allowing me to share this incredible video. Stay safe, Utah. 🔥

A large firenado formed on the #Widemouth2Fire in central Utah, just south of Kanosh in Millard County. Another reminder that Utah’s monsoon is far from over. This video was taken yesterday at North Creek in Beaver, where heavy rain over the Cottonwood Fire burn scar sent a dangerous debris flow rushing downstream. You can see the mud, rocks, trees, and other debris being carried by the flood. Burn scars are especially dangerous during monsoon season because the scorched ground can’t absorb water like it normally would. Even a brief downpour can trigger life-threatening flash flooding and debris flows. If you’re recreating near recent wildfire burn scars, stay weather aware and never underestimate these storms. They can turn deadly in a matter of minutes. 📹: Kyra Maycock

🇺🇸 A powerful sight in Draper tonight. Parker Holt sent me this video of the memorial procession honoring the two helicopter crew members who lost their lives while fighting the Widemouth 2 Fire. Thank you for sending me videos of the the lights, the flags and people lining the roadway is a powerful reminder that while these heroes came to Utah to help protect others, Utah will not forget the sacrifice they made. For the families, friends and fellow firefighters who are grieving tonight, I hope moments like this bring even a small amount of comfort knowing their loved ones are being honored and remembered. They answered the call. They flew into danger. And they gave everything. 🇺🇸 Thank you, Parker, for sharing this video. Please take a moment tonight to remember these two heroes and keep their families and fellow firefighters in your thoughts. Rest easy. This video was sent to me from the Beaver River below the Cottonwood Fire burn scar. While the flooding itself isn’t too severe here, notice how black the water is. That’s ash, soot, sediment, and debris being washed off the burned landscape and into the river. It’s a good reminder that the impacts of a major wildfire don’t end when the flames are extinguished. Burn scars dramatically increase runoff because the scorched ground can’t absorb water as efficiently. Even a relatively brief thunderstorm can send muddy water, rocks, and debris racing downstream. With an active monsoon pattern expected over the next several days, the flood threat could increase not only around the Cottonwood Fire burn scar but across other recent wildfire burn scars in Utah as well. It doesn’t take a widespread rain event—just one slow-moving thunderstorm over the right location can trigger dangerous flash flooding. If you’re camping, hiking, or recreating near burn scars, keep a close eye on the forecast and be prepared to move to higher ground quickly if storms develop.

Some communities, including Park City and Kamas, picked up between 0.25” and 1.00” of rain in a short amount of time as thunderstorms rolled through. The Cottonwood Fire isn’t done impacting this community. Just a few days ago, we shared Dan’s story about Hoover’s River Resort in Piute County. Even though the resort has remained open throughout the entire Cottonwood Fire, it’s been hit with numerous cancellations because many people mistakenly believed it had closed. Now, another setback. Monsoon storms over the burn scar have sent a debris flow of mud, ash, rocks, and burned trees onto the resort’s property. It’s an important reminder that the dangers don’t end when the wildfire is contained. Burn scars can produce dangerous flash flooding and debris flows with very little rainfall, putting nearby homes, businesses, roads, and campgrounds at risk. 📹 Video courtesy of Dan Groves, Hoover’s River Resort.
