I will never trust a fucking word that comes out of the mouth of Elizabeth Holmes - and “Billy”, if you can read this, the exact same applies to you. You Can See Everything (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) is a piece of Cinema that will last forever. Stunning. Shocking. Jaw-dropping. All I kept telling myself after the film was “I didn’t know you could do that…I didn’t know a documentary could do this.” Nath Fielder is a genius & a visionary. See this film immediately.

Brian De Palma is one of the most overlooked & underrated directors in Cinema history. This man is a fucking genius. If you disagree, you’re wrong. If you can’t see it, you’re blind. If you don’t understand it, you’re obtuse. De Palma helped shape a generation of filmmakers. Need proof? De Palma’s 1976 thriller Carrie, which is worth revisiting now more than ever considering it’s October. Also consider that Mike Flanagan is releasing Carrie as an 8-episode miniseries tomorrow over on Prime Video. Flanagan is reimagining Stephen King’s 1974 debut novel - a novel that propelled De Palma to incredible heights when he first adapted it back in 1976. I’m curious what Flanagan has to say simply because I love this story. But all of which circles back to my original point: De Palma. He sort of perfected Carrie. Is there anywhere to go at this point but down?

Black Panther. Nominated for 7 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, this elevated director Ryan Coogler’s profile to a new level & made me rethink what the MCU was capable of - largely because of the way Coogler imprinted his creative vision on such a brilliant story. Also, Chadwick Boseman & Michael B. Jordan are each outstanding. This is as good as Marvel films get.

Daniel Kaluuya hasn’t starred in a major release in four years. What gives? He’s only 37, already has an Oscar & is clearly one of the most talented actors on Earth. It confuses me why he’s not making more films right now. This guy is a world-class actor in every sense imaginable

FIRST LOOK: Johnny Depp has a new film out this March called Day Drinker, which reunites Depp with Penelope Cruz for a fourth time after Blow (2001) , Pirates of the Caribbean 4 ( 2011) and Murder on the Orient Express (2017). The trailer definitely excites me & this is going on the Letterboxd watchlist.

Gangs of New York is a film I always think about on 9/11 because Martin Scorsese kept the Twin Towers in the film’s final time-lapse despite the attacks occurring about a year before the movie’s release in 2002. This entire film is Scorsese’s love-letter to the birth of New York. A film worth holding onto forever.

The first Mission: Impossible is deeply underrated. I will always stand by Brian de Palma & will always maintain that this is one of Cinema’s most overlooked directors. I understand that this film feels distinctly different from the rest of the franchise, but that’s part of what makes it so endearing. De Palma’s filmmaking here is outstanding.

The Color of Money won Paul Newman the Oscar for Best Actor & while this isn’t the best work of Newman’s career, he’s still utterly exceptional and I think he deserved that Oscar. I will always appreciate this film because it united Newman, Tom Cruise and Martin Scorsese - three artists I love. This is a beautiful film.

Netflix announced yesterday that it’s laying off 6% of its global workforce - totaling about 1,000 jobs. This is the same exact company in March of this year that paid $587 million in cash to acquire Ben Affleck’s AI company InterPositive. So, Netflix - you don’t have money to retain working class individuals but you have money to buy an AI company that replaces them? Ben Affleck - wherever you/whoever you really even are - if you can read this Tweet, I believe selling an AI company to Netflix helped lead to the loss of these jobs. Affleck - a man who I’ve long adored & supported on this website - has betrayed my love of him in real time. Animals (🌟) is a terrible embarrassment of a film. But more offensive than Affleck’s latest dog shit film is the fact that he boasts on his press tour about how he uses AI to make his dog shit films. I am again asking - for the 4th time, the 5th time, the 1,000th father fucking time: why does AI need to be used to make art? Explain to me like I’m a golden retriever. For what reason does artificial technology need to be used to create art?

BREAKING: It’s been reported and confirmed that Director Steven Soderbergh is being brought in to complete principal photography on The Batman Part II while director Matt Reeves continues attending to a personal family matter. Soderbergh said in a statement: “I thought Matt Reeves’ work on ‘The Batman’ was stunning; it was intentional, specific and rigorously coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.” I’m glad that all parties seem to be in agreement on the best path forward here, as everyone is seeking to do what’s best for all parties involved. For now, I’m going to look back on a favorite Matt Reeves film of mine, the epic second installment in the new Planet of the Apes trilogy, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I’m hoping there’s a light at the end of all this hardship for Reeves, and that he can someday get back behind the camera. My thoughts continue to be with him and his loved ones through all of this.

Moneyball is in the conversation as one of the best things Aaron Sorkin has ever written. The film’s script was written by both Sorkin & Steven Zaillian based on Michael Lewis's 2003 book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. Moneyball earned Sorkin an Oscar nomination for adapted screenplay & it’s another example of why I think Sorkin needs to hang up his directing aspirations & focus just on writing. The result is films like Moneyball.
