There is something beautiful about the instinct of a child to protect another. Before we learn the divisions that separate us, before we are taught to fear or distrust one another, there is within us a powerful capacity to care, to help, to protect, and to love. And yet we live in a world where our algorithms and media too often amplify the worst of humanity. The cruelty, the outrage, the selfishness, the division. Meanwhile, millions upon millions of acts of kindness, decency, grace, and compassion happen every day, often unseen and uncelebrated. We can begin to believe the lie that cruelty defines us, that selfishness is our nature, that the ties that divide us are stronger than the bonds that unite us. But there is so much goodness in this world. So many people looking out for one another. So many people stepping forward to help, to serve, to protect. We are at our best when we recognize that we belong to one another. That our strength is found not in selfishness but in service, not in division but in community, not in indifference but in love. And sometimes it takes a little child, stepping forward to protect those smaller than herself, to remind us of this profound truth. May we see more of this. May we be more of this.

Awe and wonder. May we never lose them. Gratitude to this young person for this wonderful reminder. May we never become so accustomed to this life that we stop seeing its majesty, its grace, its astonishing beauty. Awe may not change the world. But it can change how we move through it. It can make us more grateful, more humble, more alive to the beauty around us and perhaps more alive to the beauty in each other. May we find awe in nature. And may we never stop finding wonder in one another. Op: Upworthy

May we scatter our days with small acts of kindness. You may never know how deeply they change someone’s day... or even their life.

Here’s to the humble heroes among us. The people who look out for others. Who step in when someone is in danger. Who protect our children and help keep our communities safe. They may never make headlines, but every day, in ways large and small, they make a difference. May we see them. May we thank them. May we be more like them. op: Pubity

Here is to those souls who inspire us. The ones whose spirit is a spark that ignites something in us all. Who show grit when others might give up. Who persist through doubt, discouragement, and disbelief. Who bring enthusiasm to barren landscapes where cynics and naysayers thrive. There is something powerful about an indomitable spirit. It doesn’t just carry one person forward. It lifts others. It reminds us what is possible. This young man lifted me. I hope he lifts you too. May we see more of this spirit. May we summon more of it in ourselves. Op: ESPN and @jessicaleedavenport

Encourage someone. Celebrate someone. Lift someone up. In a world where so many are weighed down by life’s relentless struggles, even the smallest act of encouragement can remind someone that there is still goodness in this world and that they have the power to rise.

Defy. Resist. Refuse to conform. This world often tries to tell us who to be. It drowns us in messages that subdue the spirit. It makes us embarrassed to speak out, to speak up, or even to unleash one of the most powerful forms of resistance: unconquerable joy. Our algorithms lie to us. The media too often drowns out the light in a constant stream of negativity. Don’t give in. There is goodness. There is joy. There are so many people who refuse to live like thermometers, merely reflecting the energy imposed upon them. They are indomitable thermostats: they set the temperature, bring the warmth, light fires in other people’s spirits, and free them from a climate of fear. See them. Be them. op: @the.side.quest.project

There are everyday heroes everywhere. A bystander is being praised after stepping in to protect a 12-year-old boy during a frightening encounter with a dog. According to reports, the man quickly placed himself between the child and the animal, helping prevent the situation from becoming more serious. op: @globixanews

As I said when I visited ICE facilities and met with communities across New Jersey this week: I will not vote for another dollar for this out-of-control Department of Homeland Security and ICE.

The kindness of strangers. The unexpected connection. The generosity of spirit that says: I see you. I’ll meet you in this moment. Here’s to those who interrupt the rush of their own lives to enter someone else’s joy. Who play along. Who make a child feel seen. Who turn an ordinary moment into a memory. Sometimes kindness is simply being willing to join someone else’s race. May we see more of that. May we celebrate it. May we be it. op: @regent_lodge_georgian_home

op: @loveforlifeeua One of the most emotional moments following the powerful earthquakes in Venezuela involved Tsunami, a rescue dog who was seen receiving intravenous fluids after spending several consecutive days working through the rubble. Exhausted, he was treated by the rescue team shortly after completing another mission to search for survivors. Before becoming one of the country’s leading rescue dogs, Tsunami was a victim of abuse and abandonment. After being rescued, he underwent years of training and eventually earned international certification to take part in search-and-rescue operations in disaster-hit areas. During the earthquakes in Venezuela, Tsunami helped locate around 13 people alive beneath the rubble. The treatment shown in the video marked the end of his fieldwork and the beginning of his retirement, closing a remarkable journey dedicated to saving lives.

This got me. I'm reminded of the quote: "If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” May we free ourselves in service of others. op: @hdmastery

To belittle is to be little. Never underestimate the power of a kind word, an encouraging comment, a sincere acknowledgment, or a simple expression of gratitude. Be the person who lifts up those others put down. Be the person who sees those too often overlooked. Be the person who celebrates those too rarely celebrated. The smallest act of encouragement can become someone else’s reason to keep believing in themselves.
